AC issue

Summer is starting to warm up in the northeast, so today I tried to turn on my AC and it came out warm, no change when I turned on the ac button. I checked the pressure on the ac and it came up as 140psi, which was way past the appropriate pressure. Any idea what could cause both of those issues? Faulty compressor?
Thanks for any help!
-Andrew

Going through the same issue myself. Just got a fresh recharge a couple of weeks ago and the AC blew cold as soon as the charge was done. Days later it started blowing warm again, and I am stumped. Bought an aftermarket condenser before the charge, but didn't think the condenser/ dryer would eliminate the cooling...

Wait 140 PSI on which line?

High should be around 225-250
low should be around 35-40

sounds like you could have a leak. have you rechecked the system?

not really about pressure. but testing still looking for pressure ratings. but those will always vary.

I'm not sure which is the high and which is the low. I tested the pressure on the line further into the engine bay, it's the one pointing straight towards the drivers wheel.

That would be low pressure and yes it shouldn't be anywhere close to 140.

how did you test the Psi?

found this on another thread.

Your target pressure when filling an AC system changes based on the ambient temperature. If it is cool out, you don’t fill to as high a pressure. If it is warm out, you need to go up to a higher pressure. The can of refrigerant had a chart on the side ranging from a target of 25-35psi at 65 degrees outside up to a target of 50-55psi when it is 95 degrees and above.

I had a can of coolant that I'd picked up at pep boys, it had a pressure gauge built into. So it sounds like my ac is multiple times over pressured. Could the previous owner have managed to overfill it that much?

It worked a bit last summer, it was cool but by no means cold. Because it worked to an acceptable level I did nothing with it at the time. I have never put any freon in it.

My suggestion is to take it to a garage with a AC machine. have them drain the system and start fresh with correct amount.

is your compressor kicking on?
Fan running properly?

I had mine go wonky too, the mechanic checked and it was the condenser clutch. see www.action-ac.com for parts. My mechanic put it in.
