Review of Alta downpipe-back JCW exhaust

Hi folks,

Got this installed on my 2013 R56 JCW a few days ago. I don't have any micro camera gear to provide sound clips, but I wanted to mention that I think it's a fantastic system. My R56 is completely stock under the hood, and I am using the same OEM downpipe. I love those 3.5" Alta engraved tips. They really fill out the back cove area of the car, and the brushed alloy color is a nice departure from the usual chrome tips.

The sound to me is perfect. It's a lower tone than stock, and louder. With windows and roof open, I can now hear the exhaust clearly which was my main goal. I have driven a V8 Z06 for so many years with a very pronounced exhaust, I like to hear what's going on back there at all times.

The snap/crackle/pop in sport mode is more pronounced with the Alta as well compared to stock. With all the windows up, you definitely hear the exhaust in the cabin, which I also like very much.

I would say the volume is about 30-40% louder than stock and has a much lower, aggressive tone. A great system thus far

Good to know. How was the install? Did everything line up perfectly? Any pictures of the rear with the new tips?

Glad to hear you like the Alta exhaust. I've been thinking of installing it. How long did it take from the time you ordered it until you received it as I'm in Ohio myself.

I ordered from Aaron at Outmotoring on a Monday and got it the following Wednesday. It was drop-shipped from Alta in Oregon...

Installation was not completely painless. The front part of the exhaust (about 15" back of the downpipe) was only about 1/8" from a cross member under the chassis that runs up and over the exhaust. Upon first test ride, the tech noticed that when he would lift, causing the overrun which causes the normal vibration of the exhaust, it would hit the cross member.

I got onto a chat with Alta support and they were stumped. I snapped pictures of the install with the car in the air and sent to Alta. They agreed that all clamps were located correctly, and all the sections were put together properly.

It was just barely making contact with the lip of this cross member. So the tech grabbed the grinder and shaved off the small lip of the cross member on the chassis. Worked perfectly.
