Help! r56 2007 MCS fuel filter change
Just bought a 07 MCS with about a million miles on it; figured a little PM was in order.
Picked up a filter kit from pelican, PN 11-25-2-754-870-M604 the Vaico one and set to work-
There's quite a number or write ups, I used the Bentley and http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarti...eplacement.htm for reference.
THE PROBLEM started when i tried to screw it all together, a real pita, ended up applying some light (extreme) pressure with a pair of quick grips to get the 2 halves of the filter housing back together before using 2 strap wrenches to gently (well, fairly gently) twist them together. I'm 70% sure they're well mated.
Car starts- runs about as long as it would take to drain the filter housing of fuel and quits. does not restart.
3 possibilities, as I see it, gasket ('big one') inside fuel filter housing is effed up, i jostled the suction end of the hose above the fuel level in the tank, or the main seal (the " this side down" one that's ultimately responsible for sealing the exterior of the tank) is jacked up.
What else could it be? does the tank need to be airtight for some reason?

Also- anyone have a better way of priming the low pressure pump than yanking out the fuel pump relay (pass side, kick panel, only relay) a couple times? I've got the "convenience package" so there's no key to turn, and it doesnt sound like the pump runs on ACC every time
Here the DIY for the Gen 2 R56 Fuel filter:
Its in the post with my pictured and links to a site. And parts.

Recommenced the OEM MINI one as I believe there was some issues with the Vaico one on the gasket being a hair to thick and some people struggled with it to fit.
Thanks

This kit on ECS tuning includes the white plastic housing, already assembled, right? AKA part #3 on the schematic you posted-
http://www.ecstuning.com/Mini-2007-C.../Fuel/ES36048/
If so, I should have just bought the whole kit, honestly it'd be much simpler.

Yes, that's in all in one kit : #1 in the above pic.
Thanks

Re-torqued the metal lock ring that holds the housing to the tank (apparently I did a bad job of tightening it last night) and the car starts, runs at throttle etc- BUT has a rough restart, like the line is loosing its prime. Looks like i'll have to reuse the old 'big o-ring' until i can get a new OEM one from ECS-
Also, to anyone else trying this, have a battery charger on hand. JIC.

Summation:
The Vaico o-rings from the kit i mentioned are worthless, they are the wrong thickness (also i think they might swell in petroleum). OEM is essential. attached is a pic of the o-ring that probably stressed during install, which then shredded on the second lap around the neighborhood. oops.

here's a shot of the Vaico (bottom) and OEM (used, from in car, top)

and finally why I've had such a stick up my butt about needing to do this.

That started out either white or yellow.
Things I learned: plastic sheeting is essential, as is assembly lube (10w30, Vaseline, or similar, just don't be sloppy with it). If you've got the double sunroof, put your work lamp on top of it (fewer heat emiting things around gas vapor the better.) if its tough to get the halves of the filter apart a couple of oil filter strap wrenches are handy.
and finally- it is a billion times easier to do this outside of the tank, so i would recommend pulling off the level sender and pickup assembly, so that they don't break during the process. (there are 2 little plastic barb latches that hold it all together.)
ECS, thanks for the help!
