has anyone else encountered this?

I was driving my r56 mcs and I was a at red light and I saw steam or smoke come from my hood scoop. I know my oil filter housing gasket needs to be replaced and so does my oil feed line so I was thinking maybe oil dropped onto the downpipe, I just want opinions on what it could be.

It all depends on the color and smell of the smoke.

If it's white and doesn't smell like either oil or coolant, you are likely observing water/moisture evaporation from inside the engine bay. BTDT.
More likely to be observed in snow/rain or in high humidity. The evaporation happens regardless, but when stopped, the vapors are rising in front of the windshield and be visible to the driver.

If the smoke is blue-ish or smells of oil, you are likely looking at the turbo oil line gasket failure. BTDT Search threads for many DIY fixes.

Lastly, you may be picking up traces of coolant leaks from either the leaking thermostat or the pump. Those are harder to smell, but they leave a white-ish residue at the source of the leak. After the engine cools down, visually inspect the suspect areas for traces of dried coolant leaks and troubleshoot accordingly.
