There were a couple of blurbs in some threads within this forum regarding replacement of rotors under warranty due to warping(provided that they were OEM and with OEM pads). Has anyone had this done? Is this a problem that a lot of people are having? Is it more prevalent in fronts or rears? How can you tell that rotors are warped?

Yes they will replace warped rotors if all parts are stock. You can tell they are warped if they pulsate under hard braking. The fronts are more prone to warping since they do most of the work. My fronts were warped and replaced at 24K miles with Powerslot rotors. The dealer would not replace them due to the EBC green pads. In talking to Randy Webb, the most likely cause of the warped rotors was not cooling them off after a hard workout. On the track they call this the cool down lap. :smile:

On the cooldown lap are you suppose to use the brakes every few seconds just to make contact with pad/rotor? If not who does it differ with them cooling while turning vs just being parked?

On my other commuter, the dealer overtorqued one of my lug nuts and I think
that caused my brakes to pulse now. need to get that car fixed... most-likely
a warped rotor.

yah, this is one other reason why I don't take my car to those autowash places.
I do my wheels at the very end and even wait 30min or so if the rotors are
too hot to the touch. :smile:

 

Another cause of rotor warpage is setting the hand brake after some hot laps at the track, even if you have done a proper cooler down lap ( should go slow enough so as not to use the brakes much at all). The emerency brake causes a differential cooling and warping

Go fast enough to get maximum air flow over brakes without needing strong braking. Randy said that the calipers when hot will hold that heat much longer than the rotor which causes uneven cooling of the rotors which in turn causes the warpage. In my case there is a great set of turns just before I get home and the brakes were hot enough to smell when I parked in the garage. I just make sure I back off a little sooner to alow them some time to cool before parking.

 

On the cool down laps with about half the lap to go we slow down quite a bit and use the brakes only sparingly and coast into the pit then off to the side area without braking and slowly come to a stop. No hand brake and just roll to a stop easy. Usually you can avoid problems.

Warping can occur on either front or back as described and owners have had either set replaced under warranty.
Give it time to cool down slowly.

 

Something else to also think about when washing your car- make sure the rotors have a chance to cool down before spraying them with cold water. I usually wait 10 minutes to 20 minutes... Whilst they aren't necessairly going to warp (think of what happens when you brake hard in the rain?), direct contact with cold water can't help them...
