New clutch.... ouch... my wallet hurts....

Well I just replaced my clutch and flywell at 65K.... that was not fun... even less fun was using the same OEM clutch and flywheel to remain in stock class and paying $2,500 for that feature! My mechanic also replaced my leaking water pump and belt while he was at it for a total bill of $2,900 running my 2013 repair totals over $6K!

Is it my imagination or is the new replacement clutch a bit softer to engage? Maybe it was just the worn out one was a bit stiff for wear making the new one seem a lot softer.

New clutches are softer to engage. This is because of the lack of work harndening that occurs on the pressure plate springs as they age.

The older clutch was harder to push in I think as the pressure plate is stiffer. People getting the new part which the Cooper S and the JCW share report that its much easier to push in. After driving an 2007 on the original I could tell a difference, but I remember driving a new 2007 ( back in 07') and it was harder also. That's what I noticed back in 07, but again it could be an aging of the pressure plate, possible?

The question is.... will it last longer than the original or should I look forward to another big repair bill 60K from now?

I have an 07 and my clutch is noticeably harder than the few newer cars I received as loaners.

My '05 R50 got a warranty clutch at 49k, but looks to be needing another at just over 121k...

My R56 is a 2007... amazing how much better the car drives with a fresh clutch! But my wallet is still hurting!
