Want to upgrade my audio system

I am seriously considering upgrading the speakers and possibly the head unit in my r50 cooper. I am looking for suggestions for speakers. I don't want to spend too much on them but I want better sound for sure. I want to have more bass with the upgrade. Any suggestions or links showing your own setup would be appreciated.

If you want your dash looking stock like me, add Alpine KTP445U amp $120 and add a ported powered subwoofer box at the trunk like MTX RT8PT $128. Changing the speakers won't do much as OE CD Receiver has weak power output, maybe only 8 watts rms.
Connect the front & rear speakers in parallel to handle more power from the Alpine (45W rms per channel) and use the ch 3 & 4 output of the Alpine to the input of powered subwoofer. Do a search and many attest that Alpine KTP445U has clean power and little noise and small enough to be tucked in the rocker panel or back of the HU or back of glove box. This set-up will give a run to an OEM HK system for the lack of punchy bass.

There are so many choices out there and all of them will be a big leap to the weak Mini stereo system.

I've never done anything audio before so this is all Chinese to me I think I am going to get a new head unit and swap all the speakers and if that doesn't do it then I'll add a subwoofer but I don't want to lose the already very limited trunk space.

I'm really looking for speaker recommendations mostly

Thanks for the replies so far guys!

This sounds like you are gearing up to let Best Buy or Crutchfield do the work for you.

I strongly advise against this, they will do significant damage to your wiring and kludge whatever is required to spend the minimum amount of time and money on the installation. You have been warned.

Use a proper professional and agree that there will be no irreversible harness, trim or metalwork damage or DIY.

No I will be doing the work myself and I am definitely not going to doing anything irreversible

When changing the speakers, be aware that you will probably need adaptor rings as the mounts are different.

Buying aftermarket speakers will likely result in a drop in the amount of bass you have. This is because the aftermarket drivers are designed to have higher quality sound, with subwoofers providing the additional bass.

Consider the DSPM module if you can find one. http://www.motoringfile.com/2004/10/...ion_from_mini/
