new radio install questions

I have a 2003 r3 with the tape deck. Does anyone know if this will work with any r53 stereo adapter plug? Or is it different than the CD deck adapters?

Also can I get a stereo that can attach to my CD changer? Or should i toss it and lose the extra weight

Not sure you will get an answer here....
In the US, the CD (the euro mid-level) radio has always been standard....the down market tape deck was a no-cost option if you ordered it new with the car.... But even in summer of 2004 when I ordered my car (at a dealer who sold the first batch of mini's in the us in 2002) the sales people said they had never seen a car with one....
So not sure anybody has any definitive experience here....just guesses.

Are you just trying to put the factory CD Player in the Car?

As it will control the CD Changer

On the mid-level US radio with a CD player....the op has the tape deck...
Most every us car was prewired for the CD changer in the trunk/boot....but non-us euro dpeced cars with a tape deck....who knows....

Right, thats why I asked "are you trying to put the factory CD player in the car"

Meaning is he taking the Cassette Unit out and replacing with a Factory CD Player, if his car is wired for the Changer already I would be willing to bet that the connector to a Non HK radio is the same for the Cd and the Tape Unit.

No I want an aftermarket cd player. I was curious if the harness for the tape deck is the same or different than the CD deck, so I can know which one to buy.

My second question was if i put an aftermarket radio in, will I guaranteed lose the CD changer? I may just take it out and put an 8" woofer box in the same location..

I just replaced the cassette player in my R50, the place I bought the aftermarket CD player from checked the registration and managed to locate all the extra parts I needed (harness and surround) which worked perfectly:
Autoleads PC2-05-4 Car Audio Harness Adaptor Lead - BMW: Amazon.co.uk: Car & Motorbike Autoleads PC2-05-4 Car Audio Harness Adaptor Lead - BMW: Amazon.co.uk: Car & Motorbike
Thats from the UK though!

Ive read the CD changer doesnt work with any aftermarket unit, it doesnt with mine anyway!

Ah thats fine then. If in doubt, pop into a Halfords and ask them to check your registration on the audio desk, theyll tell you all the parts you need and either buy them there or save the money and buy them from eBay or Amazon. I ended up buying them from Halfords when they checked the reg. and got the cable I linked above and a surround as the Mini tape-deck unit is slightly bigger than most aftermarket ones, in fact, I have a Philips one now which came with an additional surround as it is even smaller so I have two surrounds on it!
I did have an issue with the aerial though and never managed to sort it out so I cant get radio on it.

Unless there is some controller/interface that I don't know about, then the stock CD changer won't work with an aftermarket radio. The stock radio controls the changer giving you the ability to switch between CD's which won't be present on an aftermarket unit. If you must have the changer, there are some universal units that will work with an aftermarket radio but they are much more rare now that many people don't even do CD's in their cars anymore.

Just updating to people. I went to halfords and got a JVC unit with CD, USB, Bluetooth and aux jack. Anyhow its 50Wx4 and holy crap are the stock speakers amazing. The cassette player didn't push them at all. I can thump these things like I never knew.

Big question here is how durable are the stock speakers? Am I gonna break them fast? Should I get a small sub and lower them a bit. Or just let them do their thing? They are pretty effing quality from what my ears tell me.
