Rain sensor

I have to get my windshield replace and one of the questions they asked if my MINI has the rain sensor... I think it does, but how do I know for sure??

If you have to ask, you don't have it.

If you did have it, you'd have a square device at the top, center of your windshield, on the inside of the glass. That's the sensor unit. You would also not have to mess with your intermittent wipers in the rain, the auto sensor does it for you.

Not sure how different from model to model.. but its the black box at the very top of your windshield behind the rearview mirror. From the outside, it looks like a box with a blusih eye in it.. thats the sensor..

Apparently I did, I do have the rain sensor. I have the box, and I guess I never really noticed but my wipers do adjust on their own. I normally dont turn my wipers on unless its raining extremely hard which is probably why i never noticed.

Thanks for the info!

LOL... not sure how you could have it and not know it. Never washed the car ? Wondered how your wipers adjusted their own speed ?

I'd say just take S84's... he or she wouldn't miss it but I've teased him or her enough already.

If you had the rain sensor an easy way to check is to look for the button at the end of the right hand stalk that controls the auto wipers. Do non-rain sensor MINIs come without the button then? I suppose so.

Great thread since I'm getting ready to get my windshield replaced. Mine just has a yellow tip on the end of the stalk and no box behind the mirror. Thanks for the info.

Just look for the box behind the windshield or look at the front of the windshield at the top in the center for the sensors.

Here is a windshield someone had replaced and it looks like and the senor lens side is embedded in the glass.

As always make sure they replace that top seal. Part number 51317155304 (fits R50-R57 ) , most glass places know to do that.

Here is the sensor itself and the plastic outside of the box.

Gen 2 MINI sensor R56 models and up. Part number 61359224853 BMW/MINI shared part. Part number 61359224853 , in Diagram #1

And Here is the cover that clips to the back of the sensor behind the mirror. Diagram #2 Part number 61356930280

Thanks and hope that helps.
