Gas cap

Anyone know what all is needed to swap out the gas cap for the gas door I like the look of the door more than my cap.. And how hard is it to do?

I think this has been discussed in the past. I don't think it can be done unless you want to drill holes and do a little sheet metal pounding. Pop rivets a coffee can lid and Velcro might work. The R52 and R57 have doors because of structural requirements associated with topless cars. Some of the vendors have optional styles of caps that might be to your liking. Have you explored the Vendor Directory?

Just did mine last weekend, you need the base Cooper mechanism and the cap! I've wanted to do it for a while as I wasn't a fan of the funky S cap. It's not that hard, you removed the torx bolt holding the cap, you lift the tabs holding the plastic trim, remove fender well to gain access to the filling tube, remove the two 10mm nut, unplug the tube from the base (better put a rag in or something to prevent crap from falling down the open tube), then pull it out of the mechanism grommet. Then you remove the mechanism, before putting the new one in, just make sure you didn't messed up the little tabs on the body, as they are what's holding it. Put tube back in, re-install everything and twist new cap on. I know my explanations sucks, but it's not a hard project to do.

The only thing is that you need one from a BASE COOPER from your gen, convertibles have a smaller hole/cap.

Btw Fly'n Brick your links are all for Gen 2 and he have an R53!

Gen 1/Gen 2: Does make a difference. I'm more in the habit of looking to signatures for R model information than the screen name, D'oh. Oh well, anyway, the home page of the same links will take you to the appropriate year models.

BTW, I'd sure have to hate the look of a tank cap a whole lot before jumping thru all the hoops you did. How long did all that take?

At my age, keeping track of more than one thing at a time is a challenge. Somebody said beer....nuff said.
