Thanks to PAUL for the write up. I added a few things and the pictures for retrofitting the Sport button to R56's using the DSC switch.
I actually did it twice for reasons explained.

It works!

Thanks for this, How would I go about retrofitting a complete new button module with Sport, Auto-Start/Stop and DSC? I'm looking for a pin diagram to add the missing wires correctly to both connectors (Button module and SPEG).

 

Anyone with thoughts on going the other direction? I have the sport button, but not the DSC. Would I be able to retrofit that or the eLSD?

I see now, after typing this, the original post was from a year ago, but any thoughts are still appreciated!

 

Why do you hate the sport button? I can't even drive my car in normal. In fact it's so bad, I installed the AUTO SPORT module, so Sport is always on..lol

 

That was supposed to read "have the sport button" but I missed the letter. I have since fixed that. Also, since I'm running a tune with linear throttle the sport button on my car has no function except to make the steering heavier.

 

Agreed Sport Mode is always on my Mini as well. Absolute Slug not being in sport Mode
I wish the Sprint Booster cable was not so expensive. I remember that cable was like $60 when it first came out.

 

Auto Sport Module? Need that for sure! A link, please? Along the same line, is there a way to keep the driving lights on after a restart? An "auto driving light module", if you will? (I always forget to turn them on.) And it would be nice to keep the driving lights on with high beams as well. No streetlights where I live...but lots of twistie-turnies, and critters on the road!

 

Which driving lights are you referring to?

 

The ones in the front bumper. The bright ones that you have to turn on every time you start the car. Well, in my case, at least. Not the running lights, DRL's or "city lights". These are turned on by a switch on the lower center of the dash, forward of the shifter, and have to be turned on every time the MINI is shut down and re-started. A light on the speedo shows when they are switched on. I would call them fog lights, but they have clear lenses, not yellow or amber like fog lights.

 

Yea they're the fog lights and while they can't be programmed to come on when the car turns on (to my knowledge), I have been able to program them to stay on when using high beams.

 

Hate to burst your bubble, but fog lights and driving lights are completely different animals. The "fog" lights in the lower bumper, are practically useless in anything other than dense FOG. The do absolutely nothing for helping you see anything more than 30 feet in front of the car. (If you doubt me, try turning the headlights off by using the parking light position, and turn on the fogs. See how little they illuminate...)


They turn off when you switch to hi beams because they are FOG lights. If you are using your hi beams, then you aren't in fog...


What you actually want are auxiliary driving lights. (like a rally car) They only turn on with the hi beams. Because they ARE hi beams, and would burn the retinas out of other drivers.


Oh, google FES auto-Sport module... Out motoring, Way, direct from FES. And you don't want both the auto-sport and a sprint booster. (in fact you don't even want a sprint booster anyway but that's another story)

 

Ok. Thanks for clearing the fog/driving light issue. I always thought that fog lights were amber or yellow, and mounted low. Clear, low-mounted lights to me have always been "driving lights". You learn something new every day...well, if you listen!

 

And after reading the FES Module's details...much easier to just push the dang button! Still interested in keeping the fog lights on with high beams, and having them come on without pushing THAT particular button. It's easy to tell when Sport Mode is not activated. The lights? Not so much. I run with my lights on day and night. For safety, ya know?

 

Install on the FES module isn't really that bad in practice. IIRC the instructions have you doing some unnecessary stuff like removing seat belt bolts and such. It's just a tapped wire or two and a fuse tap in the little panel in the passenger foot well.
