Public Service Announcement - Check Your Oil tody and a poll

Hey guys,

Just reminding everyone to check their oil today -- I check about every two weeks and have been finding that I lose about 1/2 quart every 2,500 miles. I think I have a little bit of weeping at the oil pan (however this gasket was changed professionally about 10,000 miles ago).

Just curious how much are you guys adding oil to your cars?

2003 R53 with 80,000 miles on it.

We drove this car back from California after buying it with no issues -- but just in case I roll with 3 quarts of oil in the boot.

If you look under my car, you can tell oil is leaking from somewhere, but the level never drops on my dipstick, and I change my oil after 8,000 KM.

'05 R50 168k KM
Only replaced the valve cover seal to keep my engine looking prettier, and my plugs drier.

Happen to have a link to the procedure for changing this out?

I probably need 1/2 quart every 3 fill-ups. I don't like to let it get low.

Keith. who has driven a lot worse...

i check my oil level every day

when i change oil, i only add 4 qts which puts the oil level about at 1/2 and it stays there until the next change at 4,000 mile intervals

Hmm...pretty sure the mini calls for 4.7 qts so kind of surprised you only put in 4...

I guess on a 10 year old car 1 quart of loss every oil change isn't so bad.

All seeping gaskets and O rings were addressed at 80K miles.

Since then I also change the PCV Valve every 30K miles.

Oil changed every 5K miles.

Now at 174,000 miles and no consumption, zero, nada, goose egg.

Thanks gray raven. I guess until I move out of the NYC and have a place to take apart the car I'll just keep adding oil every 2-3000 miles. I change oil at 5k usually.

Is there a list of all the gaskets and O rings that you took care of?

i still think my point about letting the engine find it's own level to maintain the oil is valid

i own 4 vehicles and an airplane

everyone of them will consume oil if the oil level is put to the full mark and none of them consume oil if i run the oil level at some point below full

the most extreme is my 1997 gmc sonoma 4.3 v6 ... at 290,000 miles it still goes oil change to oil change (5,000 miles) without adding oil if i run the level at 1/8" above the "add" line ... any higher than that gets quickly consumed

My oil change guy puts in as much as he takes out every 5K, right now it has 67.5K logged on the fun meter. I check it at least weekly and almost always while waiting at the pump. Now, I'm gonna knuckle that wooden desk top and hope to he!! the gremlins weren't paying attention.
