Interior/Exterior Steering Wheel Removal
Steering Wheel Removal
I am surprised I can't find a thread on NAM on how to remove a steering wheel on an R56, but I can't. If I am overlooking one, can someone tell me where to find it. I did find a video on youtube showing a hole in the bottom of the steering wheel that released latches holding the airbag in place. I haven't looked yet, but I assume my 2011 MCS has the same set up. I guess my biggest question is....should I disconnect the battery before trying so as not to get a face full of deployed airbag?
That's a good how to!
I just did this today. It was very easy. Took my about an hour and I was taking my time.
Torque spec is 46 ftlbs on the wheel bolt FYI. Which is harder to get to when the wheel spins! I finally got to the spec though.
Is there anyway to post pics from a Mobile device on nam?
If not Ill try to post my final result later. Looks downright sexy.

Just did mine recently (2011 stock MCS wheel to JCW leather/alcantara).
It was pretty straight forward including airbag popping and MFSW swap, following the PDF posted above. I tightened mine to 63 nm. Pretty close to 46 ft-lb posted above.
One piece of advice: have some shop towel, plastic bag or something to cover your legs/seats when you work on this. There are some very bare looking metal pieces in there, and the screws holing metal bracket/retainer thing to the wheel are pretty darn tight to take off/put on. By just removing those screws, I got a bit of tiny metal flakes on my seat and I had to very carefully clean them up.
Good luck!

End result.

Internal. This is a snap of the stock wheel I took to put up for sale, but it looked identical on the JCW wheel. Those 4 screws holding the metal bracket (that holds airbag unit in place and retain MFSW unit cables) produced some metal flakes when removed. It wasn't cross threaded or anything.
