I would love to have a short throw and lever. I personally dislike how high and long my shift lever is. I dont know much about making it shorter. Short shift kit im assuming. Have read a lot of good things about the alta adjustable, yet it seems unavailable for my 2012 r56. Any suggestions from you guys would be greatly appreciated.

NM Engineering shortens the throw 20% and from what I understand lowers the **** a little.
Helix shortens the throw 37% but leaves the shift **** in the same position. That's the reason I went with it.
NM Shifter Assembly Box Cover: Use this with either of the above.
A Whalen Shift **** is a good way to go. I had mine powder coated to match my The Dread Pirate.
Most people here will say that the NM Engineering (no I don't work for them) Torque Arm Insert is the best bang for the money performance-wise.

 

You usually cannot go wrong with either Helix or NM.

I do like the idea of a cover on the bottom of the car to keep the shifter linkage free of dirt.

 

TyrolSport makes a short shift kit that I installed on mine. It mounts on the engine side, which is half the reason I chose this one. You don't have to buy a bigger cover to keep the shifter linkage clean. The shift **** remains the same height, but you can switch from 10% to 40% throw reduction.

We have a pretty unique Shifter option. It will shorten the throw as well as the height you are looking for. It is completely adjustable so you are able to set the throw/height right where you like it and the feel of each shift.

You do remove the lower cover of the box, but this had lead to 0 issues in the past seven years we have been making the shifters this way. It is just a theoretical concern not an actual one.

Choosing a product from Craven means you are dealing with an American made product that has a company to stand behind it for years to come.

 

Do it once, do it right. Craven SSK w/ the NM box, or fabricate your own box (it was done before and quite nicely actually)

 

Get the Craven Short Shifter it is by far the best and what I'm putting in my new GP and have in my Clubman.
I don't recommend the Alta, they have a bunch of screws holding them together and when they fall apart you get to pay for a tow to the shop. How do I know, had 2 customers that had theirs fall apart after a few years and have to pay that bill.

 

I have the Craven SSK and like it a lot. If you check the countryman section I posted a how-to that also covers how to make your own shift box extension for a few bucks.

I was interested in the Tyrolsport, but I think it's only for certain early R56s for now due to a change in the shift linkage or something. They're supposed to be working on a second version for newer MINIs but I haven't heard that they finished the new design.

 

From what I've seen, the NM engineering is the neatest, simplest design short shifter. The only downside is having to drop the exhaust and heat shield in order to access the box. As for the NM box, it's only a modified stock cover so if you want to save $85, you can probably make something with 2 stock covers installed with bolts twice the length of the original. That's what I plan to do. Of course, you'd have to cut a hole in the box which is between the body and the outer cover. I'll probably pick up an extra cover at a salvage yard. A new one is around $20.

 

Or you can do what I did and build an extension for $5 in parts. Attaching two stock covers sounds like a headache to me.
