At what point should I upgrade my clutch?

Hey guys.

I'm planning on installing a new Crower NS1 cam, Megan Racing header, 550cc injectors, and a GIAC tune in addition to a custom catback, Alta intake and a 16% pulley and I'm wondering at what point the stock clutch starts to not be able to handle the power?

It doesn't seem like you need an upgrade unless you do a lot of racing or are just hard on your clutch.

At the point it starts to slip and fail. Its that simple. Also as you will find out if you replace the clutch go back to a stock clutch and avoid lots of issues.

That would be a good answer if the question was "at what point do I replace my clutch?", but obviously when it starts slipping a new one needs to go in. What I'm asking is when the stock one does give up the ghost should I go for an aftermarket one with more holding power or will the stock clutch be sufficient?

The IB/W in my sig is long gone btw so my current one is running a stock clutch if you were confused by that.

In my experience the stock clutch is good up until about 250hp or so so not until you do a sprintex or big valve head you shouldn't have an issue.

Not confused. There is no need to think about a clutch failing with any mods until it does.

So with the same train of thought you don't think about changing your oil until you have a rod bearing fail on you?

Seriously. Think about it and do a search on all the clutch failures under the assumption they needed the high performance aftermarkert clutch that fails within 10k or so miles and yet with some heavily modded cars like MINIman S stated the stock clutch holds up better then most aftermarket ones. Do a search and see for yourself.

And this would be caused by lack of oil, not by not changing it.

This is precisely the reason I asked if I should stick with a stock clutch or not. Had I possessed the information that the stock clutch could handle the power I will be putting down I wouldn't have asked the question. At no point did I say "I am going with an aftermarket clutch because of x reasons". You are arguing against someone who has not made a point to argue over. I know the aftermarket clutches usually fail quicker than the stock clutch, but if the stock clutch can't handle the power from the beginning an aftermarket clutch would be the only way to go regardless of it fails faster than a stock clutch because the stock clutch would just slip with that amount of power.

I believe that is to be considered lack of oil.

caused by oil consumption, assuming your car doesn't leak

I simply gave my opinion and you thought I was confused. Then you came back with this

So I gave my opinion that you should not worry until it slips and from your question your mods should not cause any issues with the stock clutch. Thats all I was saying. So you began the arguement. But I am sorry it happened.

The reason I came back at you with the oil comment was because not worrying until it slips doesn't make sense to me. What if the clutch is just slipping because it already has 88K miles on it and the extra power was the tipping point in making it slip? How would I know if the miles+extra mods were the cause or if a stock clutch just can't handle it? Then how would I know what to replace with?

All you had to say was "your mods should not cause any issues with the stock clutch", but you never did.

I agree, Bram you are coming across as combative, at least to me.

I put a new BVH, cam, and injectors in a few months ago and shortly thereafter my stock clutch with 60K started slipping. At first, I figured it was the additional power and/or older clutch. However, once I got into it, it turned out to be a leaking tranny seal which I replaced along with a new clutch. I ended up getting an OS Giken but after some research found out up to 250HP the stock should be fine. In fact Colin, has over 270HP and the stock is working for him. Good luck!
