Anyone have a slight OIL smell in the car?

Maybe it's me but every now and again I get a hot oil smell in the car. It seem like it comes from the vents (I was in fresh air mode).

I switched it to recirc mode to see if it happens in this mode..

It might just be me but thought I would ask.

Cheers

Yes. I don't have any visible leaks, and there's no atmospheric dump of engine gases that I know of, but occasionally (even with no other vehicles around) I smell the same thing.

i have not smelled oil, but if i use the windshield washers i get the washer fluid smell coming from the vents ... so i guess if there is any oil under the hood it could get in the air vents

I had a bad smell a few weeks back but, I never saw any oil anywhere. I took it in for another service, and they found an oil leak. Cant think of which part right now but, it was a known issue and has been brought up a few times here on the board.

EDIT: It was the Oil Pump Solenoid.

Thanks.. I'll crawl around the car this weekend to see if I notice any oil in places it shouldn't be.

Cheers

Yes, after the dealer overfilled it.

Just started recently. My former commute was long (75mi. each way) so I put 50k on the car in 16 months. Lately my driving is less and I notice an oil smell suddenly.

I had this and it turned out to be a differential seal. The dealer replaced it and within 2 weeks it got really bad and now I started to look and found oil in my driveway and my parking spot at work. Dealer ended up replace gearbox, differential, harness, control modules and main computer. Within a couple of weeks the smell is back. I had them check it and they don't see any leaks but the smell is starting to get stronger. I'm going to keep my eye on this.

Mine had one too... it's at the dealership right now for the 6th time this year. I am told they found the problem (for the 4th time) and fixed it, I'll know by the end of the week if it's truly gone.

mine was related to the front axle seal. Might be a good idea to check.

When they clean it out, it takes about 3 days of daily commute to show up. It won't show up with just an idling test.

I was getting the oil smell on occasion. Had my car in for service oil change on Friday and they diagnosed oil selenoid leak. They also replaced the temp sensor as part of a campaign. They are going to replace the solenoid and the whole wiring harness. I have a 2012. June 2012 build date. There hasn't been a drop of oil on the garage floor. Odd thing is at my last service last spring I asked about any outstanding recalls and they said everything was up to date. This was after reading about temp sensor and oil solenoid on NAM. I'm not sure they are replacing these proactively.
