[Help]'06R50:Android+Steering Wheel Controls
I bought my mom's '06 (she got a new '12 Clubman
) I've been taking care of her Mini since she got it. So when she said she was going to sell it, I immediately offered to buy it from her
. I started looking for things that a wanted to change or add when I came across these.
These are the ones that I am looking at:
1.GROM-AND2-BMWS
2.GROM-USB2P-BMWS
This is the one the site recommends for my Mini:
GROM-MST3-BMWO
Unfortunately I'm a little confused. The first 2 are listed to work on Minis up to 2005, but everything I've gleaned from looking online there is no difference between the '05 and '06. If anyone can give me some information regaurding any possible differences that might make the first 2 not work with my Mini it would be greatly appreciated.
Also, I apologize if this was posted incorrectly or in the wrong place.

Pedro,
As far as I can tell, as long as you don't have Nav in your Mini all you need is the Grom-USB that you have listed as #2. The one that you have listed as the recommendation is an optical setup, and as far as I have seen there are no 1st Gen Mini's that are optical. Good luck and Happy Motoring.

Thanks for the reply, but I already bought one. Decided to take the plunge and bought the AND2, since that did what I wanted anyway and it was only 100 bucks.
It works exactly as its intended and the installation was easier than I thought
. It charges the phone while it plays and and you don't even need the screen to be on. The song info displays right on the radio. I highly recommend it for Mini owners who use android and want to play music from their phones while controlling it from the steering wheel.

How did the kit work out, looking at this kit too

Sorry it took so long to reply. Gmail sent the notification to the spam folder.
Anyway.
It works really well. I wish there was more room for it behind the dash, but it is really small and fits pretty ok. So its not too bad. Also, I would get the bluetooth enabled one. the micro usb dock audio leaves something to be desired, though its still pretty good, and you can only use it with their app.
Hope this helps.

I ended up buying the bluetooth/usb kit, I love it, I however do not have to use their app, I am using my music playing widget on my android phone, works great, plays all my songs and I can use the steering wheel buttons to boot. I included a picture of where I installed the kit, I just used two sided tape to hold it down, so far so good..
Hey, this looks good. I read through the Grom website, trying to figure out options for iPhone.
I know you guys have Android, but....
Either of you have the H/K Stereo?
The kits from Grom say I should choose the Trunk Install kit if I have DSP (Digital Signal Processing). Not sure if that's what the Harmon Kardon stereo is in 05 MCS.
Also, for Bluetooth Hands Free calls, where's the microphone? Does it utilize the one that's built into the MINI (next to center mirror), the phone itself, or maybe a corded remote mic that you clip to the sun visor?

I have the Alpine stereo, I talked to one of the guys there and he recommended me to install it up by the stereo because of the supplied mic. As far as using the mic by the mirror, I dont know, I used the supplied one and if you look at my second pix, you can see it to the top right of my phone, underneath the door toggle. Hope this helps. Also, I dont think it matters what phone you have as long it has bluetooth, the voice on my kit actually says iphone, usb, aux for options..
