I thought I did everything right.

I drained it did not spill a drop. Used a graduated
cylinder to measure exactly 2.4L.

Built a little tool using a funnel and varying sized hoses.
One fit the big hole, the other extended down into the little hole.

I left the drain plug off but the standpipe in.

It stopped filling up quickly. Then started leaking out
all over.

Now I have no real idea other than to guesstimate.
Which is fine I figure if I am 100 mL off out of 10L
I am probably OK.

But I can not get it to fill up.

PLEASE HELP

Now I have to explain to the wife why I can't drive the
baby anywhere....why I broke a perfectly good car.

BTW, the fluid coming out was BLACK.

 

Did you measure how much you drained?

Sounds like you didn't completely drain the transmission.

 

have you tried putting it in "gear" and cycling through them, the trying to finish the top off? most trannys are checked HOT, and after a short drive to ensure the torque converter is full....

 

If 2.4 liters came out, then the same must go back in assuming it was filled correctly in the first place. I believe that after you re-installed the the standpipe, fluid continued to fill the pan, causing new fluid to overflow the standpipe. I would put the pan bolt back in and finish with the 2.4 liters plus a guestimate of how much spilled.

 

I did not explain well.

I can't fill it. My little improvised hose was not airtight. I corrected
that with some electrical tape and got a decent fit ramming it in pretty good.

The problem is when I fill it no matter how little it immidiately gushes out
of the fill hole (granted it is not a pressure type fit, but I got it in
really good this last time).

I do realize what comes out has to go in. I'm past that now I will have to
get it close (eventually, when I figure out how to fill it) and use the
book method to get it right.

This is not the problem. The problem is I can not get any fluid in.
I mean maybe 50 mL total and 500 now on the garage floor.

I'm going to walmart to buy a new funnel, exactly like the one the
guy had that did the fantastic write up. But I'm worried this is
not the problem (again, I had a decent fit on the 5th try). The problem
is the fluid just will not drain into the transmission from the funnel.

 

I got a new funnel. Will start fresh in the am. I hope some peeps here can shed light on this problem. It just will not fill up. I admit operator error in the beginning but it should have gone in later on. This is "bad".

 

Posters on other threads have said that it can take a long long time to fill it from the top. Warming the fluid may speed up the process. But I see how getting a tight fit can be a big problem.

Does anybody have a link to that tool where you can fill it from the
bottom (just in case).

I will try the new funnel in the morning. I'm not going to try to heat
the fluid I keep the garage at 80 and it seems to flow well.

I'm thinking up how to make a threaded plug with a hose.
Of course everything is closed tomorrow (don't blame anybody at all it
IS a holiday lol)

I called them to buy that tool a couple months back.
They said they were changing suppliers and were not sure
when they would get more and that they were out of stock.

It did not leave me with much confidence in the company.

 

Got a fresh start this morning.
It turns out my homemade funnel with the electrical
tape was on there really good. A lot better than the
flexible one with the clear hose (which I did try this morning).

Not one single drop is going in.

Just to make sure (I have re read and re read all
the printed aricles from here that I printed out, plus
the bentley manual). The fill hole IS the T55 on top
of the engine, under the coolant hoses?

I'm going to go get a micro hose this morning
and try and fill it from the bottom.

I hope somebody out there can shed some light on this.

I just ordered that tool. I got the last one. I told him he should order
some more because other people will want it.

In a bit I am going to go get a micro hose maybe a vacuum hose from
advance auto and see if I can use that to fill from the bottom.

Since I now have no idea how much came out I plan to use the
book method fill cold and let it warm up. I do not have a way to
measure the fluid temperature (I do have the bav tech tool but for some
reason it will not read real time engine parameters even though it is
supposed to do so. It does clear error lights fined though).
I will tape a thermocouple to the transmission pan and have to call that
temp good enough.

This all assumes I am able to pump it from the bottom using a tiny tiny hose.

 

Great! All done for this round. I'll do it three more times in December.

Several people here recommended the fill from the top method (with GREAT
write ups). As we have seen mine would not fill from there I have no idea why.

If you decide to do this I recommend you get the fill from bottom tool.
(I did get success today fashioning a hose that fit pretty well inside
the overflow tube).

You will need: the orange fluid transfer pump from advance auto (they
sell them many places but I have noticed the cheaper ones do not have
a hose that is very flexible and it kinks very easy). The filler tool.
Crush washers. Suitable J3309 Fluid. 5 mm hex wrench. Voltmeter
with temperature reading.

I estimate the time to be well under two hours the next time I try, and that
includes jacking all 4 tires up and getting it level, and test drive.

I can not over emphesize how EASY this is to do when you do it from the bottom.

I'll probably start doing this once a year. The fluid that came out was BLACK.
