JCW Turbo Swap

Does anyone know if the 2009 factory JCW turbo can be used as a straight swap to replace a failing 2007 MCS turbo?

Yes! Don't be tempted by a tune for that slightly larger turbo

I understand it's a direct swap but other intel I have says that it will not work properly. Can anyone elaborate on this?

Dunno who told you that...

Worked fine on mine...as long as you don't try to go above 22 psi of course.

It will even run on the stock MCS tune...the guy that bought my car has had it on stock factory tune since last November with no issues. I would recommend tunning it though.

Will there be any benefit to doing this? Or is the benefit only that it will tune better/more aggressively? My stock 2007 MCS turbo needs replacing, but if thtere is no immediate benefit, I will pass, as I am not a super-modder.

The perfect question... i was wondering this subject too.

So..

Its direct swap with no CEL.

Will increase the HP/TQ without tune? (just replacing the turbo)

Wich tune is available for this mod? had to be a MCS remap or a JCW Remap?

What else will be need? Different Spark plugs, oil, intake, exhaust??

Where is the best place to buy it? wich online page, or in the BMW/MINI Dealer???

Thanks a lot!!

JCW turbo is rated to 250 bhp compared to 205 bhp rating for the MCS turbo. Direct fit and usually those that fit see a performance gain straight away with no other mods. I guess the ECU sorts itself out in the same way you get gain with a FMIC. No other mods required but JCW spark plugs are a goid idea at some point as is the exhaust manifold from the FJCW. With FMIC and TBE and remap on the MCS here in the UK you achieve between 240 and 250 bhp at the flywheel. With the Jcw turbo you get more. With oskada plasma coils and jcw manifold should be circa 280 bhp at flywheel in conjunction with other mods mentioned.

As to price. Here in UK mini charge £1200 plus £250 surcharge which you get back when you give them old turbo. I used to be able to sell at approx £750 with no surcharge when I could get hold of them.

A local MINI dealer is saying that the exhaust manifold is required. Is this not the case, and as you say, the manifold is optional? Why is the JCW exhaust manifold useful? What about adding new gaskets? The dealer is recommending this as well.

Jcw manufold is better for overall flow, temps and power. Up to you if you use or not as might as well fit whilst working in that area but you don't have to as MCS will still work. Gaskets are metal and may not need changing but not expensive so possibly worth doing.

As for a "must", you dont need anything else than the turbo itself to have the car back to the roads. Tune, sparks, etc. etc.. nice to have once you have the turbo? yes, to take advantage of the flow gains.

Then again its a matter of budget and what you want to do with the car, you can buy a new JCW turbo, or now that you have a seized one you might wanna try to fix it or build an hybrid. Or buy mine so I can upgrade!

As for tune, Alta, RMW and other have tunes for it (you need to specify if thats the US or Eurospec one),

You can buy it in ecstunning, germancarparts or one of the vendors here at NAM. You can even find it in ebay.

If one puts a JCW turbo on a stock MCS, what HP gains, should one expect, 5-7HP? Yes, I know that there are better ways to get HP, but I have to replace my turbo anyway and am just wondering.

Mine picked up around 20hp/20trq on stock tune.

Obviously the gains are much higher once you get it custom tuned

I had to replace my MCS' turbo after it died due to my BOV cracking and damaging it due to high demands placed on the BOV after installing the AccessPort tune. So, I opted to install the JCW turbo and exhaust manifold. Wow!!! This is a fantastic if expensive upgrade. With these two upgraded parts, the car pulls harder and feels faster than with the AccessPort tune on a stock MCS. When you add the AccessPort tune on this parts combo, the car is incredibly quick and can do anything you want it to. It reminds me of my old '99 E36 M3, but more fun!

Personally, I am not a fan of the throttle feel and car response that you get with the AccessPort (the idle rev is a bit higher and the car feels edgy/anxious/wirey), so I will be getting the JCW Stage 1 (intake, software, exhaust) upgrade at some point in the future. But, yes the AccessPort is a great product for the price.

As it is so expensive to upgrade the turbo and exhaust manifold ($2200 in parts; $1500 in labor at the dealer), I can't recommend this on its own. But, if your turbo dies and needs replacing, you owe it to yourself to upgrade to the JCW turbo and exhaust manifold. It is well worth it! I no longer have JCW envy!

I also upgraded to the JCW turbo inlet pipe a while back as well. Another great upgrade which works very well with the JCW turbo and manifold! Felt like 5HP or so over stock and added a nice throatier (but not loud) engine note!

This is a JCW part, so I would think that the answer is no. But I don't know for sure.

Ok, I've become a little confused. Will the JCW part 1 3717 5824 53 inlet tube fit on the turbo side of a Stock MCS turbo without issue? Way indicates that the JCW pipe size is larger, bigger turbo inlet for the JCW. What is the low-down on this?
