Navigation & Audio Integrated Sirius and Bluetooth?
Integrated Sirius and Bluetooth?
I've been cruising the forums for information on adding Sirius and Bluetooth to my 07 Cooper S Hatch. I'm pretty keen on wiring, as I've retrofitted Nav/Bluetooth and recoded lighting/windows/etc on VWs/Audis. I've done motor swaps following wiring diagrams and such, and would really like to do these installs myself. I'm a little bit **** about not having everything integrated. I do not have any experience messing with fiber optic networks.
Bluetooth Telephone. It doesn't appear this option is in the car, but I would like to add it. According to the few threads I've seen, this can only be accomplished by going to the dealer. I'm more of a DIYer and would like to do it myself, so I guess the questions are: Are the parts sourceable? Does it require the dealer to do the programming or can I buy a tool to code it myself (similar to Ross-Techs VCDS for VW/Audi)? Are there any aftermarket units that integrate well with the car? It appears Dice and the Plain-talk options aren't available for the R56. I really need the hands free, but A2DP would be nice as well.
Sirius radio. The dealer is willing to sell me the 'Sirius install kit' which they said should be all the parts for $550. I think this is a fair price. Has anyone purchased this kit and done a self installation? I'm looking into NCS, and according to posts I've seen from strobeyprobey, I'll need to activate the fiber optic network going to the factory installation location under the seat. Has anyone done this? If so, what parts were involved, or was it just a matter of reconfiguring what is already in the car? Any other suggestions on where to look for the parts? An integrated aftermarket solution would be acceptible in this case as well.
Answers, links to threads, and links to places to research/purchase would be appreciated.

1. OME bluetooh module - and most likely all the wiring is there for it in an 07 but then the car needs to be programed to accept it.
2. Parrot Bluetooh - They make a system that integrates it into the R56/55/57 cars.

You can probably get the kit cheaper from Pelican Parts, just contact them with the part number the dealer would sell you.
But again it will need to be programed into the car.
Check in on the Modifications/Electrical Section for information on the NCS Expert it cover the programing of the MINI.
you have two choices

2. Parrot Bluetooh - They make a system that integrates it into the R56/55/57 cars.
Have not done this myself but it is the "Upgrade Kit" then it should have everything you need.

Thanks! I haven't seen the Parrot, I'll take a look. I'm not too worried about programming, it's activating the fiber that I'm not too familiar with.
So there really in no "activating" the fiber.
I found this: http://www.cartronics.com/Mini.html#plaintalk
It integrates with the car's fiber optic network and has a lot of features. The one catch is that the folks at cartronics said that if my car is not equipped with a CD changer, it will need to be coded using an Autologic. I guarantees me there are no other options on the market that can talk to the fiber network in the means necessary to do so. Being that others have installed factory bluetooth by coding with NCS, I was wondering what the autologic could do that NCS couldn't. According to them, the BMW/Mini parts can be activated because they have serial numbers that can be recognized by the car, where this is not a Mini part, so the car would have to be programmed otherwise.
This would all be moot if my car has a CD changer. The 'Boost CD' in the dash doesn't appear to be a changer...is it and I'm just retarded? Is there even a CD changer option for our cars?

Not true.
The fiber network does not even exist in some R56s. My 08 did have the "diagnostic loop" installed from the radio head unit to the location above the fuse box where the other three or four fiber lines terminate. But none of the fiber in my car was connected to anything (other than the diagnostic loop).
Now those three or four lines need to be configured properly. Easy to do with flash lights (especially if you have a blinking one). The RING direction is labeled with arrows on the connectors. Two of the lines go under the pass seat for the sat tuner (US bound R56s are all Sat prepped) ring. From under the pass seat, another segment runs back to the IBOC (HD radio tuner location) and two lines run from the back IBOC location all the way to under the fuse box. So the extra fiber lines are sometimes not used depending on the equipment in the car. I had to pull the connectors apart to reconfigure my car to add just the IBOC tuner without the sat tuner. So essentially I had to bypass the sat tuner connections.
So I had to pull the pins and connectors apart and light each end to trace which line and figure out the ring direction from the head unit and each accessory.
For the original question you definately can install the factory bluetooth/USB/IPOD and SDARS sat radio tuner yourself. Lots of time and diss assembly. Took me about six to eight hours taking my time to complete the bluetooth. Nylon pry tools and small and large torx bits are required. There is some intricate wiring changes involved in removing pins from the head unit harness but as long as you have a tiny set of screw drivers you should be able to get the pins out. Need to be careful there.
Also you need to remove the seats disconnect the battery before unplugging the seats to keep the airbag light off, requires a computer reset if you turn the power on with out the seats plugged in). I did it, but on purpose, since I have DIS v57 running I can reset the airbag computer.
So for the sat radio you need the kit with the bracket and underseat plastic box (you may already have that if your car as DSC) and the tuner itself.
Then for the bluetooth you need the retrofit kit and the ULF module. You can find the part numbers on RealOEM. I ordered my stuff from parts.com. And I found a used ULF module cheap.
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...26&hg=65&fg=95
Here is the part number for the BT retrofit kit, 65412152530. Comes with everything but the ULF module and an iPod Y cable (you can get knockoffs on eBay for like $8). Current ULF high module part number is 84109224674
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...84&fg=20&hl=17
Instructions are not included so you will need to get them from a dealer or online. I have the BT install instructions.
To "activate" both of these items requires a change to the Vehicle Order in the two copies of the VO in both the CAS and FRM modules. You need to the sat tuner and add the bluetooth retrofit codes and then recode/default the car. You will have to have NCS Expert running and the D-CAN cable.
Now back to the MOST bus fiber optic ring. Even if your car doesn't have the "diagnostic" connector over the fuse box the bluetooth retrofit kit comes with one! So basically it is just a loop of fiber that connects to the back of the radio with a connector that you can disconnect and reconnect to the fiber lines that need to go to the sat tuner. And the bluetooth ULF retrofit harness fiber lines insert into the MOST bus at the back of the head unit directly. Still need to make the direction of the signal is correct, but carefully looking at the arrows and flashlights make it pretty easy.

Well, the dealer is offering me the Bluetooth kit for $550 and I believe it comes with one year of subscription, which isn't bad really. I just didn't want to get it and have to pay them 400-500 installation if I could help it. I do not have the part number for the kit, and the only thing I could find on Real OEM was the receiver and the box. Does the kit for Sirius have pieces for the Fiber ring like the BT kit, or are all of the parts already there, they just need to be reconfigured? I don't recognize any of those parts in the diagram.

I see you posted the part numbers for the Bluetooth in another thread a little over a year ago. I'll have to find these.
Retrofit kit 65412152530 $196.94 (msrp is $215.95)
Control Module 84109224674 $360.71 (msrp is $429.41)
Edit: After searching parts.com, these numbers don't show up in their catalog.
May I please have a copy of the BT install instructions so I can see what I'm getting myself into? mikebrooks <a t> gmail [dot] com
Thanks for all the info.

You're a pot of knowledge.
I got your emails, and I'm skimming through them now, thanks. The instructions make it look pretty manageable.
Part numbers on the Bluetooth that I snagged from an old thread seem to be obsolete and RealOEM has a cryptic note that I don't understand for the kit:

"Media Oriented Systems Transport is a multimedia fibre-optic network optimized for automotive applications. It is a network developed by the automotive industry for the automotive industry. Its design allows it to provide a low-overhead and low-cost interface for the simplest of devices, such as microphones and speakers. At the same time, more intelligent devices can automatically determine the features and functions provided by all other devices on the network and establish sophisticated control mechanisms to take away distractions from the driver of the car as different subsystems try to communicate information to him."
then the Fiber optics have to me on any time the radio is working. I.E. any time the car is on as the radio system uses the OEM head unit to produce alert sounds.
Now why you thought you had to take the connectors apart I have no idea but I have installed a number of retrofit kits for Sirius and it is really Plug, Program and Play. No need to modify any wiring.
As for the Bluetooth kit it should also be Plug, Program and Play after programing.
How can the ring be working if nothing is plugged into the sat connector?
The alerts are signaled to the head unit over the CAN bus.
All I can really say is the fiber under my passenger seat was dark. The fiber output from the head unit ran from head unit over to a connector above the fuse box that went right back to the input on the head unit to create a loop the dealer can plug into.
If I grabbed a sat tuner and plugged it would not have worked.
Now that I think about it I wouldn't be surprised if my dealer had changed the car as they had to reprogram it a few times. The MOST bus is a faster way to reprogram the car. My car could have very well been setup with the fiber under the seat lit originally.
I had to reconfigure my connectors at the rear for the HD tuner and by the fuse box to have just the HD tuner. By default the ring was setup for both HD and SAT in my car. If your Clubbie has a removable panel on the right side in the boot, pull out the panel and check out the most connector for the IBOC tuner, then look for the other lone fiber line taped down to the main harness. That's what I had to swap out.
Two very large harnesses come with the kit. Has to be run to the back of the head unit where a number of pins need to be extracted from the connector and replaced with the new harness pins and the fiber lines have to extracted and reconfigured as well. Then there is a harness to run the new BT antenna and to the added mic in the head liner. The main harness terminates under the driver seat. There is already a harness down there that is close to the correct plug but it is different and unused. Running the harness from the driver seat well up through the dash and up to the mic location was a PAIN-IN-THE-YOU-KNOW-WHAT. There is not a lot of room to feed the harness through the dash over to the head unit. Then you have to cut the carpet out from under the seat and install the plastic carrier box.

I have a 2010 Cooper S. It has factory Bluetooth and is supposed to be capable of accepting the factory sat radio kit. I believe the part number for the kit is 65110432322.
I can buy the kit for $479.22 from Alexandria Mini in northern VA. Where can I find installation instructions and will I need to have a dealer program the kit after installation or is it plug and play.
Thanks for any advice.

It will require a dealer program (or J2534 or using NCS Expert).
Installation isn't too bad requiring you to remove the passenger seat, cut a square hole in the carpet (if there isn't one already) and install the module. Basically has a socket and a MOST bus connector. I have the PDF floating around somewhere.

Strobeyprobey you are a fountain of knowledge
Thanks to you and others for posting all of this information as I have learned a lot.
I'm going to have the dealer retrofit Sirius into my car, a 09 JCW, no nav, but has bluetooth. Not sure if it has DSC. Either way, I have a box below my passenger seat with what looks like the proper wiring going somewhere. Guessing it is there for the bluetooth, and possibly the DSC if I have that.
Someone else in another thread with an 09 JCW said the dealer said they CANNOT retrofit it, which scared me.
But according to these threads, it sounds like everything should be wired properly already, unless additional wiring is necessary on top of the bluetooth? Got a little confused with the MOST bus and all of that.
Anyway, I'm going to just have the dealer do the install. I called Mini SF for the $599 kit, the guy called me back yesterday and said he thought it was back-ordered, but turns out it showed up as "no longer in production" in his computer. Plus, he needed the VIN to check "other options". Guessing this is to see what wiring is there?
He is going to look into it and call me back. Thought that was weird. I'll update the thread once I hear more info

I believe all 2009+ Coopers have DSC standard. That is why you have the box under the passenger seat (in the US). The Bluetooth module is under the driver seat.
Everything is wired. But the optical MOST bus will need a bit of reconfiguring to add the Sirius module in the chain.
I am sure the kit is avaible to order. Or worst case they can order the parts individually. The ETK has the inventory of parts of the kit.

Well after a couple weeks of back and forth the final answer from the parts guy at Mini SF (who actually is on the BMW side I found out), they no longer make it. Going to be calling another mini dealer in the area... ugh
The parts guy at Stevens Creek was a lot more knowledgeable, but basically said the kit has been discontinued. There are 0 kits at local dealers, 0 in the US and 0 in germany.
He said the boxes and antenna are available separately. There are 1600 boxes in the US, for example. But the harness he has never seen sold separately.
He mentioned Mini sometimes does this and comes out with a new kit #, so to try back in a few months. Or calling sirius and asking if they have any. Or finding a used one on ebay or for sale.
Either way I'm getting radio in my car! I'm not giving up...

OK, I'm reading through all of these posts about radio upgrades, and I'm dying to know what you did about yours! Plus, I live 2 hours east of SJ, and my MIL lives in Los Gatos. I just bought an '08 MCS that can have SIRIUS with the retrofit kit, but with installation it's $1k at the dealer. There has got to be a better way, BUT I'm not DIY savvy. I just need to be pointed in the right direction. I *really* want to be able to use the existing head unit. I don't want to add anything to the car in terms of equipment if I can help it.
Thanks!!
