For your safety

Mini-Cooper S. I've had that wheel slip thing that I think is allegedly there to... well, I don't know why it's there, but it's dangerous. Personal opinion. Been driving for many years and love, LOVE my Cooper. But this is one of the most irritating and dangerous features of this car. I don't mind it telling me that not all four tires are spinning at the same time, but to kill the power until they catch up! WTF! That power drop has put me in many situations that has almost (in EVERY situation) put me in an accident.

Sorry, venting. PO'd because I can't find my battery. Several opinions on this apparently. Not under boot. Under rear seat. All that's under rear seat are bolted curved (they are toward the front of the seat) black plates. What a PITA (Pain In The A**) to get to! Haven't removed the plates to see. Can't even get the rear seat out!

Mini SHOULD have included a guide on how to remove door panels (rattling door handles, speakers shorting out... get to them how... without paying Beamer prices?) and interior stuff. You know, basic stuff. Like WHERE'S MY FREAKING BATTERY?

Sigh.

I'm going away now. Sorry. Bye. Keep in touch.

For your safety

If you car has not been modified the battery is under the mat in the boot.
(The black plates, under the seat, are the tops of the fuel tanks)

If your car has DSC try turning it off and that, the power drop, won't happen.
I believe there was a software update the helped, to eliminate, on cars with and without DSC.

Hope this helps...

Wheel slip thing that is allegedly there......?????

Next time you post tell us what year and model car you have, it will help considerably with correct answers....most of the door panel rattles are caused by people taking them off, usually to put in bigger spreakers which they run at such a high volume that it shakes everything in the car loose....<end my rant>

Battery is in the middle of the trunk floor, under the panel....

back in 2002 one of the other original owners I knew tossed his Cooper-S off the edge of the road and trashed it during a "club run".

He insisted that he could have saved the car if DSC hadn't taken over and prevented him from powering out . . .

I dunno . . . I guess I've never driven aggressive enuf to see DSC or ASC kick in.

Observing his driving, I did decide I didn't want to ride with him however . . . but he did register good times at the go-kart track.

p.s. the owner's manual can tell you where the battery is ... and how DSC works

DSC can help & hinder, if it was the be all end all no MINI's would ever go off the road & crash. Maybe your friend is an excellent driver with a highly developed skill set. If he is I believe him.

Hey Capt in Florida you don't get much snow & ice so I can understand how the ASC hasn't been engaged.

If your MINI is a series 2, the battery is under the hood, on the right side, just in front of the windshield, under a little plastic door.

I am sure the haynes guide covers a lot of the "how to's", including beating Beamer pricing.

9 times out of 10, your speakers are okay and the "short" is actually in the wiring harness connector to the head unit. The wires are pushed into the connector and the pin snaps in place. Sometimes these pins loosen up over time. Not a hard job to fix at all.

Clarification and Thanks

to MINIdave: sorry, I thought I did. 2004 Mini-Cooper S with the Harmon-Kardon sound system. On the doors are a tweeter above the door handle and mid-ranges below, large speakers in the back. I can't turn the sound up to where it's ear-busting, but I normally don't anyway. One day, the passenger side handle just started rattling. Not loud, but a persistent, irritating sound. And also, on another day, the front of the dash (near the window) started rattling (a piece of folded up paper is currently stopping that). Oh, and where the two-cup holder in the front, it is now rattling.

to BMUN8IVE: Haynes guides are helpful, but only for certain things. Haven't bought one for the Mini, though, and it's kinda hard to cough up the giddas they want for it.

to kazlot: I will try to pull the carpet up in the boot. Seems to be glued down. Maybe I didn't pull it hard enough when I met resistance. Can be the only place it the black plates are the tops to the fuel tank. Thanks for the DCS tip.

To all others: thanks. I have neglected some areas of taking care of Sparky (my car). I will rectify that. As for the aggressive driving... yes, I am aggressive and the Mini is the only car that has ever taken it and asks for more! I'm not stupid about it, though! I have powered out of situations before and hit the brakes in others, so I can go either way. Rather go fast. So, again, thanks all, you've given me food to my starvation.
