R56 Sunroof
Sunroof
Well it's the dead of summer here in Philly and the sunroof is now seeming like a bad option.
The sunscreen does not seem strong enough to keep the inside of car from baking.
I'm thinking of getting a 30% tint put on the inside of the sunroof to keep things cool.
Has anyone done this?

Yup, on my last mini ('08) always had a problem with the sunroof....used to **** me off. Spent 31K on a car and the POS sunroof didn't want to work when it was 80 degrees or above.
HOWEVER, it did not deter me from getting a sunroof on my '09, it works perfectly every time.
Sorry, venting....lol. Yes, put 35% on my sunroof. Wanted to put 20 on like the rest of the car but I had heard stories of sunroofs shattering.
I've had mine tinted for a year in 100 degree day (though Oscar rarely sits out in direct sunlight) and no problems.

Not to go off topic, but did you find thatvthe 35% ceramic seems almost as dark as regular 20%?
I did my car in 35% ceramic and I swear it's as dark as the 20% regular tint on my truck.

), but it's definitely not as dark as some 20% that I've seen (but no idea if those were ceramic).
I have 3% (some shops don't carry it).
And I am currently having some problems with the summer heat and the sunroof working constantly, I will be contacting mini very soon since it's still under warranty.

Thanks for the posts. I'm going with the 35% tint. Should be installed on Friday.
BTW- My sunroof also acts up when the temp is 95+. It slides back half way then closes on its own.

Actually, THAT may just be an adjustment and lube. If the track isn't parallel, it may bind the further it goes back and then start to close.
I'll bet that your problem isn't the same as all the other problems the sunroofs were having.
My '08 wouldn't open until the car cooled down by going down the road which was the same problem many others were having.
Let us know what happens.

You may be right about that. It feels as though it gets stuck in the track before it reverses back and closes. I'm in for warranty work on the 27th and will let you know how it goes. The good news is I get a base Clubman as a loaner to beat on.

If this isn't true, it seems the manufacturers sure have wasted a ton of money the last 50 years making tinted glass in their cars.

I hate to say this but you're speaking semantics. Tint doesn't have to reflect to work. All it needs is to block out the sun's rays to help keep a car cooler.

I see the 2011's have darker tinit now on the sunroofs - guess MINI is getting the idea.
My dealer told me just before leaving the lot with my new ride that the motor for the sun roof is susceptible to heat. When you try and open it and it simply tilts just give it a slight amount of upwards pressure on the back edge and it will continue it's way back.
Actually there is a HUGE difference in reflective properties that has nothing to do with tint. Researched it 2 weeks ago before making the choice on ceramic film for the sunroofs. There are also metallic films that reflects good.

Well I did get the 35% tint on both sun roof panels. I'm compltely happy. It has significantly cut down on the sun heating up the passenger compartment, and you can still see out the sun roof and enjoy the scenery.
Thanks for the tip!
BTW - My sun roof opening problem was fixed with a simple lube of the tracks. I think this should be done once a year, especially if you live in a climate that gets a lot of rain or snow.
Cheers.

I put a perforated Union Jack graphic on the sunroof of my Clubman. The company that made it said it reduces light transmission by 25%.
My sunroof opens alright, even on 90+ days, though I had a loaner from the dealer that needed help to open on a hot day.
