R57 Out of Gas
Out of Gas
Thought the computer would be more accurate . It showed I had 19 miles to get to a gas pump. Run out of gas . Luck would have it . I was about 500 ft. from a gas station. I should have known better.
Had a similar problem with the speed . The digital read had me 8 mph below a radar sign check.
Should quality control do better in checking the readings at the plant before releasing the R57's and other cars. Has anyone else had this problem

The speedo there is a built in error due to European laws that state it can not read a spped of less than what the car is actually going and can read up to 10% + 2.4 MPH higher than the what the car is traveling at.
As for the gas gauge You should NEVER let the car get that low. The "Miles to Empty" is a GUESS based on the average MPH of the car over the last 18 miles. I.E. it is not designed to be really very accurate. This can be fery damaging to the fuel pumps as they use the gas as a lubricant and we al know what happens if there is no lubricant.
There are many people here that complain that about the gas gauge as it also is not very accurate for each candy corn. The first one or two candy corn on average start turning off after about 75-100 mile (maybe a little more depending on driving style) while the last two before the red ones go off for about 20-205 miles of driving. So not consistent at all.

For the fuel gauge, I have seen fuel meters costing ten times what the system in a MINI (or any other car for that matter) does that could not accurately detect that tiny amount of fuel splashing around in your tank when it is predicting 19 miles to empty.
The speedometer is working as designed. schatzy62 gave you the specs above. Note that MINI was not required by EU regulations to indicate a speed that much higher than actual (as is sometimes implied), but merely allowed to. They are required to insure that the speedometer never indicates less than the actual speed. Note that other makers can and do choose less conservative calibrations.
What about the quality control on the sign that clocked you? Has it been calibrated? Before you blame the car, you should understand there are more variables to the problem not to mention the information that was posted above.
As for the gas, silly to let it get that low anyway.

Not to add insult to injury, but I have had the speed signs show a differnt speed then the one on the car speedo.
As for the gas, I have gotten to one acorn ... But on the way to the gas station. That was because I was forcing myself to find a Shell station since it is a TopTier fuel supplier. Not sure about that toptier stuff though...

In my R50, I would regularly let it get down to single-digit miles before refilling. However, my R56 appears to be far less accurate as far as true miles left on the tank, so I tend to refill at 1/4 tank or so.
I guess this does answer the question about whether or not the range includes the "reserve" portion of the tank - apparently it does.

Speedo: Comparing with the speed shown on my GPS, I've consistently seen the Speedo showing 2mph above speed on GPS. 8mph is a bit too much of a difference. The radar check sign could've been faulty as well.
For the gas gauge, I've driven about 2miles once when the computer showed "---" !

PS....500th post! Yay!
Today when returning home on a 1000 miles trip I was running low. All the stations that came up at the exits were off-brand and I wanted "good" gas. Finally my Garmin showed a BP 6 miles ahead. Miles to go was 9
and the MINI was running fine. I Pulled in with the trip ODO showing 494 miles and got 14.067 gallons for an MPG of 35.117. Not bad.
I do not make a habit of this and I was probably lucky this time.
