Non-dealer oil change

Was wondering if an oil change at 6000 miles by a non-mini dealer would affect the warranty on a 2009 Mini S? Thanks.

Not if they use recommended oil filter and oil... Cheap filter and wrong oil, maybe, but MiniNA will have to prove that caused the failure. Not just say it did, but PROVE it...

They can't just void your warranty. Say you installed a aftermarket exhaust. Mini NA can't void the warranty on a failed door lock... One has nothing to do with the other.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnuso...s_Warranty_Act or google the Magnuson-Moss warranty act.

While that is true, if they refuse to honor the warranty you would have to sue them to enforce the law.

On the other hand, I doubt they would hassle you over an oil change unless it was bungled. Use an oil that meets BMW LL-01 specs, and an OEM filter.

This is not a problem if done correctly. Every time I'm at my dealer I pick up a spare oil filter. He knows I have it changed locally at about 6 months and I let him do his yearly free one. (The dealer is about 100 miles away). I go buy BMW 5W30 oil from the local BMW dealer and use it. No problem.

I do the same thing. Royal Purple and a new MINI filter at the 6 month mark and Mini does the yearly one for "free"

Independent BMW specialists would be able to do it for you with the correct oil and filter for less and good customer service.

Its easy to do your self . Just get a oil filter on the net there is a list on Nam . I purchased a set of rhino ramps from a local auto store that work perfect . You will need a 8mm hex scoket to get off oil drain plug & a scoket to get off the plastic container for the oil filter which i purchased from mini mania & also got the oil filters . Just be careful on the o-ring for the oil filter to put it back in right location or you will have a mess LOL = i did ! Very easy DIY job and it will save you $ in the future . Just look up oil change on a 09 or r56 cooper on this site it has pics that help a lot ! If i can do it you can ! Later El Tiger owner of a 09' Cooper Hardtop !

Definitely worth doing it yourself given how much the dealers tend to charge.

Even if you figure in $50 for the oil/filter, my dealer wants roughly $50 for labor.

I just had mine done at my dealer for $59.95 plus environmental fees and tax with coupon... Pretty cheap!

Oh the other hand, they reamed me on replacing a wheel arch. I was quoted about $150 with the reflector and it ended up being $200 without the reflector Didn't feel like arguing about it.

Oh yeah they also stole my vw rechargeable flashlight out of my cigarette lighter adapter (getting off subject now)...
