That can't be good-CV Joint failure
After replacing both Half Shafts 1200 miles ago (split boot discovered during clutch replacement). There was a wierd torque steer upon down shift that began immediately after replacemenm
, but I chalked it up to single mass flywheel...but no chatter, clicking, or growling. Upon slow sharp right hand turn up a steep side road POP!
luckily no other damage, (other than someslight scraping of wheel. Ball joint is good; don't know why it happened. Any suggestions?

Hey - I blew my original driver's side back in May. Replaced with a "DSS" from fcpgroton (read: cheap chinese trash w/ lifetime warranty) and just broke my second of those. If you went with one of the cheapo new or remanu'd ones, I can commiserate.
Driveshaftshop.com does not list any mini applications, however I just called and they do indeed have the plans for R53 axles, "stage 2" which have 1yr warranties and are rated up to 450hp. $399 for the driver's side, it'll take them a few days to build it in-house and a few days to ship. So we'll see, but I wish I had called them back in May.

If it's an aftermarket one, it's inferior metal and/or sloppy design tolerances. I had the same exact carnage as pictured with both of my "DSS" axles, during autocross. They just shear out of the socket.

It was a "new" Car-Quest First Equipment something...the blueing is actually heat treatment, I replaced the half-shafrts at 65K only because I was replacing the clutch and I had a torn boot...and a BIL in the business so I get my parts at cost. (hehe, I d ont't think you can put a cost on this cv...)the new shaft had 1200 miles on it and 500 of those miles were clutch break-in. I just got back from pressing carrier bearing into housing.
