Turbo 101 anyone-oh-one?

Hi All,

I just bought an 09' S and need to know where to start understanding the beast that lives within. I would like to make some tame mods, as I like it the way it is for the most part, but most of all would like to understand how the turbo system in this engine works.

I am very familar with motors, and supercharges, as I have built these in prior lives, however Turbo is a new chapter in my quest of motor understaning.

I understand the basics: Exhaust spins the shaft and the impeller compresses the air into the engine. I know the thing spins extremely fast, generates a bunch o' heat, and takes time to spool. What I do not understand is what items like a BOV does. Also what are quick mods for more response/power that will not break the bank. Any reading reccommendations/links will be much appriciated.

I am not looking to autocross, just add a little kick in the boot and keep my engine reliable and well-running.

Be Well

Its for a WRX boxer engine, but the principle is the same.

The pop off valve relieves pressure between the compressor wheel and throttle plate then the throttle plate snaps closed to prevent compressor surge and damage to the turbocharger.

This is a Honda B series engine, but its a 4 cylinder and its a little more relative to your engine.

^^^covers all of the major components and there function

http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbob...o_tech102.html

^^^Covers the different numbers and such that are used to size turbos

^^^My favorite, covers things like efficiency maps and the like.

the other cool feature about the R56 engine is that it uses the direct-injection technology (which is typically reserved for diesel motors)...

Are people running bigger turbos on these 2nd generation Minis, or is there just no room to put anything bigger?

Thank you everyone for the awesome contrubution. So a BOV really does more than just make noise. From what I understand its the 1st, inexpensive mod that can be done without messing too much up.

I am not one for huge HP gains, but if there is something that better balances the engine for a better driving expirence, I am all for it.

Some Guy, Amazing reading. Definately absorbing the knowledge.

You really don't need an aftermarket blow off valve. The stock one is perfect for the application. The car will get back into boost faster with a recirculating valve. A recirculating valve is optimal for a street car, while vent to atmosphere types are either for the noise on a street car, or for race cars that flow a high amount of pressure.

Turbo charger sizing is a matter of trade off's. A larger turbo will suppley more compressed air to the engine, but requres more time to spool up-turbo lag.
