Drivetrain Plasma coils worth the cost?
Plasma coils worth the cost?
Anybody check out the latest vendor announcements? One vendor seems to now be selling aftermarket ignition coils for the R56. I wonder if that is a weak point and relevant area of the car to modify.
Here's the NAM link to the vendor's post...

Hey it's all about hp/lbs then just hp. Drop some weight and tell me that you don't notice the difference.

Definitely worth the cost, and when combined with a colder heat range (8) plug, then it's a win win situation.

There is so much snake oil in the spark plug/coil domain it is very hard to identify what is real. "Back in the day" ignitions were so weak, a lot of these techniques had noticeable improvements. ANYTHINIG would help the ignition in an original Mini! In the days of super emissions, the OEM is forced to fire every cylinder every time. Actually the ECU will throw a code if you don't.
We see stickers on serious high dollar race cars. Problem is, you don't know if it is because it goes faster, or does no harm and provides sponsorship money.
All that said, there is some science behind some of it. The goal is to ignite all of the charge at the correct time, every time. You can't do better than that. But that is really difficult. For me, I would need to see real dyno numbers, and not from some weekend tuner mag. As we have COP already, I suspect there is not much to gain. If something as simple as a new design coil or new design plug really provided that big an improvement, I assure you , every OEM would put it on. (COP is a good example. Much more expensive, but works much better) Show me the tests!
