Auto Locking

Greetings, I have searched the forums but haven't found anything regarding my question. I have 2008 MC keyless....Is there a way to set the car to automatically lock when you leave the car? If so, how do you set it? My friend has an 05 MCS and has this ability. I would love to have this, so when I walk away, the car locks up. very sweet.. thank you..

How would that work, exactly?

Say you walk away, yet the key is inside the car and you are locked out?

That is an option, you have to look in your manual for instructions. You can either not have it do anything, lock after you start driving or lock after a given amount of time. If your keys are in the ignition it won't lock after you park, but if you leave them somewhere in the car it will still lock... So you gotta be careful there... If you have comfort access that changes everything, like I said, read the manual...

I think that only works if the car was locked, you unlocked it using the remote, but didn't open the door. In that case, the car will relock itself after a short period of time.

I'm pretty sure this isn't possible. I have comfort access and there is no setting which allows you to lock the car after a certain amount of time.

There is a setting which allows the car to lock all doors once the car is rolling though.

I would love it if the car had the converse of this, that is to unlock the car as you approach it (get rid of touching the car altogether.)....then it would ask me how my day is going, then pour me a coffee or an ice cold brewski served from the secret compartment Obviously I kid about the beer as drinking and driving don't mix.

The bad part about that is you walk out to take the garbage out and the car unlocks, w/o you knowing it. Then you get robbed and its the cars fault or BMW's?

I never really understood the point of the auto locking cars or the comfort access. I'm so paranoid about my car I probably lock it 8 or 9 times while walking away. I don't think I'd feel comfortable with my car doing that for me.

It would have to automatically lock as you walked away from the car.

Before my car was delivered (with Comfort Access), an SA described the system like this. You would get out of the car and walk away. It would lock automatically. Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way. You have to push the black button on the door handle to lock it, or push a button on the fob.

This is for the people, like us, who are paranoid. The auto locking is really auto relocking. If you unlock your car it will relock itself if you don't open a door in a given amount of time. So if you unlock your car, then someone calls you away, the car will lock itself again even if you forget to do it.

My Toyota PU does that. I hit the unlock button on the fob and it unlocks the Driver door, if i hit it twice, it unlocks both doors. If i do not open the door drivers door in say 20 seconds, it relocks all the doors.

My ONLY gripe about the whole locking of doors is that it makes NO SOUND or in the case of my truck, the direction lights flash once when it is locked. I like that it does that.

The mini does nothing? one just has to hope everything worked out....

your mini can flash the lights when you lock or unlock. they are options in the obc to set it up. If you have the alarm you can set whether it chirps or not too.

I can hear the doors lock on my 2007 MCS. Also the indicators just inside the window drop down. I don't need the @#$&# horn sounding to know my doors have locked. I hate when people do that.

Like others here, I'm super paranoid about locking my car, and I thought the lack of the horn would make my OCD even worse. But it actually did the opposite, and I'm more methodical when locking and leaving my car. Sure, I circle my MINI to check both door handles and hold out the key FOB as I walk away to prevent accidental button presses, but I think that routine is a bit more incognito than a horn beeping 3-4 times as I walk away. Annoying.

Also, a big plus on auto-lock on drive away.

My Corvette did this. It would unlock when you approached so you only had to work the door "handle" and then would lock after you closed the doors (I think after 8 seconds). If the car wasn't running and you opened and closed the doors with the key still in (as if you had left the key in) it would beep at you. It would not lock if the key was in the passenger compartment. You could lock your self out if you had your key in your gym bag, for instance, and put the bag in the hatch and then.... OOPS not that I ever did that.

It was nice never having to ever do anything but keep the key in your pocket.

My boss just got a new Jeep that beeps every time he locks it. Apparently he loves it, he sits upstairs in his office playing with it all day.... My window is right next to where he parks his truck!!!

I guess that makes sense then, but if I eventually got comfortable enough with that, I'd still be running back to the car to make sure the doors actually locked!

I rented a Pontiac once when my Acura was in the shop. I drove it home and stopped at the bottom of my driveway to get the mail. Left the key in the ignition and the engine running. The door didn't stay open. The car was headed up a slope and gravity overcame the detent that holds the door open. The car automatically locked the door. I'm outside, the car is running, and the doors are locked.

I thought with the keyless thingamabob that when you walk away with the key it would automatically lock... only if you had your key.. I didn't think it was a timing issue. I like that when the car goes over 10mph it auto locks. I would love the feature that when I walk away with the key, it would autolock...
possible? i'll look around in the manual for this. thanks.

My Miata has the "Advanced Keyless" and I it didn't lock the door when I walked away so I asked the dealer about it and they said it has to be programmed to do that.

Once they did set that up I still had a little trouble getting the car to recognize I was leaving and it was time to lock the car. It's annoying.
