300 WHP Help

Hello all! My name is Matt Pina and my father about to buy a 2009 Mini Cooper S. I have a 2001 Subaru 2.5 RS coupe with over 500 AWHP so the 170 stock crank HP is... well... lacking. I know nothing about Minis and after a couple of weeks searching on random Mini forum web sights I'm still a bit lost. What do need to do to get 300 WHP in this car? What can the stock drivetrain take? What are the general weaknesses on the car for a tuner? I have read that the optional LSD is junk, is this true? My father is very very close to buying a Cooper S, what options are a must, if any, what options are awful or are useless, if any? I've been heavily modifying cars for years so with that said is there amy reason to get a JCW Mini or is a JCW Mini just a Mini S with overpriced bolt-on parts? Any help would be greatly appretiated!

At this point there are no 300 WHP 2nd gens running around...There have been a few exhibition cars that have reached there and beyond but those were one off drag racers.

Not sure what mynes can do you for but won't hurt to ask. Of course ask the other tuners as well.

Frankly if you are gonna try and take it to that level the JCW bits are gonna be tossed along the way so stick with an S but not a JCW S.

gnatster could be correct about the R56 not out with 300 yet. I do know they have no problem getting there with the R53

The JCW comes with lower compression and a bigger turbo if I've heard right. The compression alone would be a better starting point for making more power, not sure how long the stock pistons will last as you crank it up.

RMW probably has the most ECU tuning experience on the 56's right now so giving Jan a call for his suggestions couldn't hurt.

Bigger turbo is your best bet. With Jan from Revolution Mini Works now being able to tune the car, 300whp should be easily achievable if you slap a big turbo onto it. But keep in mind that it is still a 1.6 liter engine!

The electronic LSD is great for the track, but is not designed for the drag strip. Not sure what the stock internals can take though. And a stage two or three clutch would do you pretty good with that kind of power also

Yea... I was expecting for it to be hard to get 300 WHP with a 1.6 ltr. Thanx for the help guys and JIMINNI I'm waiting for the Mynes forums to accept me into the forum but thanks for the sight! So I guess I got some more questions. I heard a JCW Mini has forged internals and a duel scrole turbo, is this true? I was expecting to have to use a bigger turbo, are there any good big turbo kits out there, I saw the ATP GT28RS kit but I would like to see some more options. I was reading the Hybred Turbo forum on this sight and that looks like a good option also. Does anyone know if this engine is used in other cars, hopefully a tuner. I think I read that the 206 uses it but idk. I'm a road racer and auto x'r not a drag racer so if it's good on the track it's good for me. Thankx for all the help so far guys!

It should not be hard to get that amount of power out of a 1.6
Your Subaru makes probably 600 Hp at the crank meaning 240 hp per Liter
and if you do the math figuring a 12% drivetrain loss for the mini
it would only be about 210 Hp.
Its well within the amount of power the engine can produce
The problem is currently the Tuning.
Call everyone you can find out everything and go from there.

Speak to Alta, Revolution Mini works, Mynes, and any other tuner you can find that tunes minis. I believe Alta may have the most information on bigger turbos, because i think they have been working on one for a while.

Also, check with some tuners over seas because in europe they have been able to tune for a little longer and i think there are already successful tuned big turbos on r56's.

Tuning is not that much of an issue now, given that the kit is set up right, and not hap-hazardly as some have been done.

However, for me the big thing is what can the motor take. Until people start popping motors at a given horsepower level, we won't know what these motors can take horsepower and boost wise. If I were going to throw a GT28RS on it or even a GT25...I would do so with the full intention and expectation that something is going to break. You don't know what something can take till you break it, and as far as I know...no one has yet (if they have they haven't admitted it or announced it...)

Yes - The engine is used in a Peugeot 207 RC (not 206) And I am now running 247 whp (not crank) and it´s running great.. I don´t need more.. But we tryed to make more power but then it startet running lean.
I know others 207 RC owners trying to push 300 - But they are not there yet - sorry for my bad english I´m from Denmark.

247 wheel hp out of a 1.6 liter prince engine?

please do tell your mods. That's quite a bit more than I've seen anyone else get.

Yes I know "I think the force is strong in this one"
We started testing it without any mods. 194 whp. well not bad..
JCW Turbo inlet hose with k&n cold air intake, Audi 2,0 tfsi blow off valve(internals), Forge intercooler reasonator delete hose, Forge intercooler kit. Milltek downpipe cat. 200 cell. devil from cat. back. Lightened crank pulley and Steinbauer Box. I know that this is almost commen on all the minis in here but well I got 247whp and 302 nm. testet another place to 244 whp and 303 nm. so they are "real" shell V-power 99.
