DTM-style or Rally shifter?

So, has anyone found a nice DTM, or rally, style shifter for the Mini? I mean one with a short throw, that is tall and vertical? I have the Alta SS, and it's stubby, bent and really moves quite a bit given how short it is.

I am interested in working with someone to actually design and proto one of these if there isn't one out there. Any takers?

Quaife makes a sequential box for the MINI...

1 small problem with it...you can buy a good used MINI for the cost of the box.

I was thinking that would be one option...but maybe short of that, we could have a nice taller, straight lever with about 4" between 1 and 2 and 1 and 5? Now that shouldn't be too hard, should it?

I would love a tall shifter for the MINI, something similar to this for Honda's

http://www.fastlineperformance.com/shifter.htm

I really do not like hunching / reaching down when on the track with the driver layout of the car, makes the hands much too far from the wheel.

Yeh, that FLP is the exact item I was thinking about. I emailed them--maybe they will do a custom unit for the mini?

That would be excellent, I would love a setup like that, and would purchase one if someone decided to make one without a doubt.

The first pic which looks like the setup for the R53 is pretty sweet and From the looks of it being elevated above the factory mounting points it has to be a flick compared to a "throw"

Well, these are perfect examples of what I was thinking about--especially as I have quickly realized we must raise the pivot point--to get it out of the way of the exhaust, and to provide much more room to get the leverage required, and the **** close to the steering wheel.

Oh well...

I'm not quite getting what the vertical cables are doing. Must be little levers below transferring the vertical movements to the car's horizontal cables

The realoem picture is not very helpful, but the vertical rod you see shifts the gear plane (from 1,2 to 3,4 and then 5,6, and of course, R). It's a simple system: one cable shifts gears, say from 1 to 2, the other cable, engaged by moving the plane of the shift lever to the left or the right, determines which two gears you are selecting from. These racing shifters execute the same movements that the OEM shifter does, hence the need for two mechanisms--for and aft, and plane-shift. They are not sequential shifters, but maintain the H pattern, albeit with shorter travel, probably.

btw, FLP got back to me, and seem interested in the idea of making their shifter for the Mini. I got back to them, and will report on anything worth reporting on.

This is the optional shift stick to the Sequential Shifter System. The stick itself is not too pricey but the other items needed to make it work do add up a bit

We had a prototype billet cage system done up at one point but time and money kept it from seeing the light of day. I am not sure where it may have ended up but I can look into it.

don't think I could do Sequential

So you had a tall short shift setup like the Germans? ( pivot above the normal pivot linked together boxed in)

That was the general idea . Raise the pivot point and get the shift **** up close to the wheel " rally " style . I had nicknamed it the " tall short shifter ". I do not remember how far we got with the system as it was a few years ago and priorities tend to change towards the more pressing projects.

I'd guess the project is dead, so you'll be waiting a long time for a post...
Time for someone else to pick up the mantle.
