Porsche 998 Versus Mini 998?
Porsche 998 Versus Mini 998?
Ok, this is OT, but am I alone in thinking it is not only humorous, but a little absurd to see a Porsche advertisement on NAM?
It's like, "Gee, I've been saving my pennies so I can rebuild the 998 engine in the little rust-bucket classic, but ya know what, I'm tired of wrenching this pint-sized Mr. Bean machine. Hmm... let's see--oh I know, I'll sell my house, become homeless and spend the $135K equity on a new Porsche 998. Wait, that won't work--where would I park the car? Ok then, maybe I could sell my MINI and my Mini, sell my three bicycles and my new power washer. Crap... I'm still $130K short.
Darn, no Porsche 998 for me.

I'm just joking... not offended. And yes, I goofed with the 998 reference as those are still the test mules for the next gen dream machine. Now that's really good news. I have at least until 2011 to shore up my disposable income if I want a 998.
But really, by then I'll be ready for a family cruizer so I'll be daydreaming of Panameras.

Ya my Dad has a 03 Boxster, I absolutely love that car. Handling is soooo nice and precise. Could use a little more power but still an amazing car.

Those are great videos. S Schimdt is great. I also love the one where she raced a delivery truck around the Ring.
Never seen those arena race events before... Interesting. Back to topic: So, there are a few guys out there who own both MINIs (Minis?) and Porsches, therefore it's not completely nuts to see Porsche ads on this site-- I guess.
Actually, I love Porsches of just about any vintage, other than the 924 and 928 models. The dream car of my youth was a 930 turbo, but I wouldn't want one in fear of seeing a puff of smoke in the mirror and knowing that the repair would be financially terminal!

I've owned both a 924 and a 928.
Loved them both.
But shunned by Porschephiles.
I wish I still owned the 928, it was a great car.
I paid $15,000 for the 928 many years ago and thought "omigod what did I just do!".
I paid $17,000 for the MCS... no buyer's remorse at all!

My reaction when I first saw a new 928 (years ago, of course) was OMG, it's so HUGE... and with a V8, it must be a turnpike cruiser.
My how times change. Just recently saw one (they're pretty scarce where I live) and the first thing came to mind was how it doesn't seem big any more.
My favorite of the shunned Porsches are the 914's.

914 = designed for VW which abandoned it; Porsche decided to produced it
924 = designed for Audi... same fate
928 = conflict within the Porsche family as which way to go - small & lightweight vs big & heavy American sized GT. Ferdinand Porsche (founder of Porsche Design) wanted the latter, Ferdinand Piech (current Emperor of VW Group) preferred the former. They also thought about ending the 911 due to its cost of production (too unique, no economy of scale by sharing with other models.)
944 = chassis evolved from 924 but with 1/2 928 Porsche engine & tranny
968 = last evolution of the 924/944 series
Many Porschephiles forgot that the firs Porsche was really a "tuned" VW. The Cayenne is share with the Touareg. The 911 is so thoroughly glorified because of the unique shape and once famous oversteer (light front end)... hence the old adage "you don't drive a Porsche, it drives you." And it's really the only model Porsche puts any consistent racing effort behind. In 1988/89, the limited production 944 Turbo S (or 951S) out-gunned, out-handled, out-braked the 911 Turbo till the next generation of 911 Turbo came along. Although I don't care what Porsche owners say about what is a *real* Porsche oughta be, I must admit my aspiration of owning a 911 (964 or 993 specimen) one day... me no like the current Carrera. Caymans are sweet though.
