More pictures of Japanese Mini's but on sale in Japan (Link below - click on each pic for more)
Many of the older Mini's still have their UK numberplates fitted while many of the newer ones have some interesting and unique mods...........standard air con on later Mini's does not leave much room under the bonnet though!

Japanese Retro Conversion on 1.3i
Very nice example below of a Japanese Retro conversion on a 1998 Rover Mini Cooper 1.3i with air con (don't think Japan ever got the MPI/front rad?).........SU carb, 10" wheels/discs, centre speedo dash, toggle switches, Mk1 indicator/column, wing mirrors, external hinges, door check straps, rounded door corner at "A" panel base, early style full front valance and even sliding windows!

Lot's of Minis went to Japan in the 90's and early 1000s. Now are being dumped. Too bad they are all to new to import into the US. Must be 25 years old or older to be exempt from fed laws. Possibly older depending on your state.

They have very strict MOT type vehicle tests which make running older cars very expensive...............keeps the car industry selling new cars to replace all those prematurely scrapped (or exported to UK and Australia which also have Right-hand drive used car markets).

This is very true. It was almost like every car in Tokyo was brand new. They all had HID headlights too.

Many Japanese Minis are now being re-exported back to the UK now for this reason and as a bonus for us in UK they are mostly rust free and have standard air conditioning due to the better climate!
