Dorky cheapskate repairs

Ok, maybe I was inspired by another recent thread. But my glove box latch spring recently broke and I don't have $200 to replace the whole thing. So I put my 'Jimmy Neutron-like' brain to work and I came up with this fix....for free!
You need -
One rubber band (found inside kitchen junk drawer)
Two small screws (found inside misc screw box in garage)
One drill
You figure out the instructions.

My left vanity mirror fell out of the visor. I trimmed the vinyl for access to the visor base material and used HD velcro to hold the mirror in position. Saved $75.
The tabs broke off the air box cover. Used a #6 x .75 sheet metal screw along side the old tab area placed so that the head of the screw clamps down the cover. Saved $90.

the plastic clip that holds the right side marker light (Directional light w/ the "S") into the fender broke off. It was hanging out of the fender, swaying in the wind.

$21.00 plus shipping to replace.

~or~

1 dab of RTV Silicone to hold it in. Easily removed to replace a bulb in the future.

I got a piece of 1/4" or 3/8 rubber tubing and stuck it behind the latch. It takes a bit more force now to open and close it, but it works well. Equally as cheap! Good thinking.

The parcel shelf was keeping my hatch from closing. Rather than asking the dealer to fix it I taped pieces of foam to the rubber feet on the shelf, it doesnt hit the wiper motor housing anymore. Price: free, Time: 5 minutes.

Front left wheel fell off and lost some lug bolts. Stickyback velcro strips were the answer. Just kidding.

I've fixed my MFE sevral times after minor collisions.

One crack was fixed like this:

For other smaller ones and for some fractures, I made my own composite bonding strips. (packing tape and epoxy) First I roughed up the area with sandpaper, then smeared epoxy on it, then a layer of the tape. Later on, more epoxy and tape. It became harder than the fiberglass-plastic was to begin with.

Cigarman's glovebox fix

My glovebox kept coming open when I drove. I took two pieces of heavy velcro and put one side on each side of the door near the rubber bumper and the other side of the velcro on the corresponding glovebox lip. Now it coses securely and takes a bit of force to open the door.

A foam strip of window aircon insulation works for that too.

Heh, I've got that fix on my car too!

I accidentally broke one of the tabs that helps keep the headlight washer in place. I simply found a small screw, ground the top and sides down so it had a rectangular head, screwed it into the headlight housing, put a slight dab of silicone to seal, and it was set!

In the spirit of BMW suing for intellectual rights, my people are going to contact your people.
Glad my dorky cheapskate thread inspired you xbritt! Considering today's financial crisis, anything helps.

That is way better then the packing tape (found under passenger seat, still there since moving last month) that I slapped over mine. As for the broken side marker someone else mentioned, mine got... double sided tape... I'll be working on that once it's no longer covered in ice, snow and slush . I will be trying these much better ideas, thanks!

3rd brake light cover/reflector was coming loose from assembly causing leaks into boot. Replacement for the whole unit was around $100. Removed lense and glued back on with Elmers! Problem solved, no more leak.

I took my 3rd light out, put some clear silicone caulk on it then replaced it. No leaks since and you can't tell I did it.

For a squeaky moon roof, i used double sided tape and 1' x 4" pieces of a mouse pad taped to the air flaps (probably not the technical term) and the squeak is gone!

One of the washer jets "dislodged" - finally (for giggles) put a tiny squirt of insulating foam in the hole and put a piece of tape over it to hold it place for an hour or so. That worked so well I almost forgot! (over a year ago)

I'm holding the glovebox door shut w/ black duct tape - just attach to the handle first and pull down when you stick bottom half to door itself (amourall removed, of course). Wedging the foam in didn't help - will try something more McGyver-ish soon...
