New Product: Dab N' Smear

I saw this commercial this weekend and was considering trying this out.
Has anyone else used this yet? What are your thoughts?

I haven't had much luck with the old 'paint and toothpick' technique myself
so this looked like a good option..IF it works!

Eh, sounds too good to be true. Chips are often lower than the unchipped surface so it doesn't make sense.

Wow... that stuff looks great! I wonder if we could accomplish the same thing by using our normal touch up paint followed 30 seconds later by a soft cloth with a bit of solvent on it? I've got a few chips and will have to give it a try. Thanks for the great idea!

This is a remade or same product as the old Dr. Color Chip. Some OK results with darker flat colors, but NONE of the results or application of the product were as easy as ads make it appear.

I would pass. Most products of these type are junk. Why the rebadge from the old product? Usually that means word got out that the original was junk so the sellers rename it and try to sell the same snake oil under a different name.

Always be wary of any demonstration when they don't show you an extreme closeup of the repair. Touch up paint applied to a car can make it look great from 2 feet away. Closer and you'll see the blob.

There are many products on the market that use this solvent approach. Langka and Dr. Color Chip do that. I only have experience with Langka and it'll take all the touchup off if you aren't careful when using it.

I've used dr color chip on two cars. I had better success on a flat color (red) than on my dark silver Mini. I also think the lack of primer on the Mini makes filling in chips difficult.

The second gen MINIs use the IPP paint process that eliminates the primer coat. Essentially there are two base coats and a clear. The savings to MINI is no Primer or need to bake the primer...saves money and energy.

Yep the first base coat acts as a primer, the second coat of that base coat has the color and depth properties, then the third coat is the clear. They call it a wet on wet application. I'm not 100% certain that the Oxford plant uses this same process as I read about the IPP process from BASF's procedure, but it sounds the same. From what I understand, the IPP process is just as good as the traditional primer method, but saves on energy because normally they would primer it, then oven bake it--that step is eliiminated. It also means the manufacturer can push more cars out faster to assembly, and it saves them energy costs as well.

The only downside I've read is that sound dampening isn't as effective on non primered cars--but our MINI's aren't all that quiet, so it's not much of a conern.

My soft top is very quiet. So I don't know what all the complaints are about the MINI's paint not being quiet.

But then again, I have had a hearing loss all my life, maybe that has something to do with it

Quiet is a relative term and I was comparing it to luxury cars like Lexus' that isolate you from the road.

I "hear you" there. My 740i was living room quiet. I think what makes my MINI more quiet than others is my tires and wheels are stock. Even with my hearing loss [THAT makes all things relative, for sure] I think my soft top is still surprisingly quiet for a convertible.

By the way, I want one of those washers [early XMAS for myself], can you PM me on where and how I should do that. Thanks!!!

We just got a new Clubman, and primer or no primer, it is WAY quieter than my 03.

So is there no baking of the paint? What about off-gassing, should new owners wait to apply wax? Ours was a launch edition, so it has done any gassing it would need to, but what about those that are only a month or so out of the factory?

This is a misconception. The paint is still baked, but only once. Normally it's baked after the primer stage, then base and clear are added then backed again.

The 2nd gens are baked only after the clear. No special attention is needed upon receiving the car because for all intents and purposes its the same.
