where can you get matte clear coat? I've been looking for that in a retail place

 

i picked it up at homedepot. it was one box of matte amongst dozens of gloss clears :(

 

cool...I'll have a look. I have been using expensive wheel paint and finally tried my jeep wheels with, umm, rustoleum. it actually has a better finish than either VHT or Duplicolor wheel paint.

 

i used rustoleum bbq paint for the centers and rustoleum stove appliance paint for the white

 

Did you disassemble the wheels to paint them?

 

sure did

 

Oh man, you've opened the flood gates...

1. How long did it take to dissassemble the wheels?
2. What tools do you need to do it?
3. Are there any specific requirements for torquing the bolts when you reassemble?
4. How is the paint holding up over time?

I'm sure I've got more questions....

a couple hours. 14 bolts for each wheel, i wrenched them by hand to make sure or do my best not to strip the bolts.
12 point 8mm bit. also called a "triple box" bit.
28lbs and be sure to use blue loctite.
aside from me curbing them the paint is holding up just fine.

Did you have any special diagrams showing the order in reassembling the bolts and what torque ranges to use before arriving at 28lbs?

I think I smell a trip to the powdercoater coming up soon!

no diagrams. just cross patterned. no torque ranges. the bolts are titanium...

 

Ti Bots do stretch, only once. Many maufactures recomend TI hardware to be used only 1 time and replaced .

Here are mine, powder coated black/dark silver painted rim.

I've got a PW/PW/PW MCS with the webspokes and wanted to keep the factory wheels (love the webspokes) but change the silver tone to something that would make the cream/brown in the PW paint pop a bit more... It's a light bronze powdercoat with a bit of silver flake in it. It changes color with the light... going from a light brownish silver in intense sunlight to a darker bronze in the shade/cloudcover.





While I had everything apart, I cleaned the insides of the barrel out with an abrasive sanding wheel and had them powdercoated in a darker brown with a slight gold flake in it (too bad that it gets lost inside the wheel, but it does hide brake dust better).
