Question about potential HP gains from dealer installed JCW on automatic

I was reading a thread about GIAC coming out with their software for the R56.

The gains according to their dyno graph showed 6whp for the software and 13whp for software and full exhaust.

Guesstimating a couple of grand for 13whp, I wasn't overly impressed. I guess I was expecting around 15 with just a tune, let alone an exhaust.

My question is (and I don't know how much difference it makes on an automatic) but would you estimate that a dealer installed JCW kit would yield about the same?

I was thinking that 13rwp was low but apparently it seems that the factory installed JCW is only putting out an add'l 18whp.

And that's with the factory JCW (pistons?) so is it safe to say that the dealer installed JCW will only put out 13'ish whp also?

If that's the case, then I guess we're having to spend a couple of grand for under 15whp.... not quite what I was expecting.

Opinions?

Thanks,

Mark

From what I saw of the GIAC information, it looked pretty sad. At least not nearly what I was expecting at all. The Alta looks much more promising but it is also a piggyback.

While the JCW engine kit doesn't yield really high numbers, the medium numbers and the software tune really take the r56 to the next level, so I've learned (getting the JCW kit installed saturday morning).

I've found on several threads different dynos of the Stage I JCW. Together with the fact that BMW notoriously under-rates their cars, I found the dynos/information of the Stage I JCW = 204 hp/207 lb.ft. at the crank. The more well-known numbers of 192 hp/200 lb.ft. are actually at the wheels.

I will do another search and copy and paste the links for you! Unless you've already found them.

In this light, it makes the JCW even more attractive for me At first I was very skeptical about "only" 15 hp for the larger $$ of the jcw. But it's the extra torque and ecu-remap, and the very nice exhaust, that sealed the deal for me
Plus I can say both of my power figures are in the 200's... even if that's really at the crank

A couple of grand for 15hp is a waist of loot. I would get the alta piggyback vs a new computer. Or remove a couple of parts off your car to lighten it up to yeild the same performance of 13hp.

JCW... Warranty... moderate-sound-level.. finger-pointing-immunity...

It might be a waste of your loot but it's not a waste of mine!
My previous cooper I went bananas on with the aftermarket. But this time around I'm doing things a little differently It was hard to see all of the gains available from the aftermarket for less or equal value, but,
sealed the deal.
not looking back.
Happy as can be

Anyways, OP, if you want the jcw dynos I can find them for you. Good luck with jcw or the aftermarket or BOTH!

Since you are talking about an automatic, you should take a look at this page to see what the ALTA parts could possibly do for your MINI. On the dyno graph that says bone stock auto, that is incorrect, the MCSa had an ALTA CAI installed so it wasn't quite stock.

Is dealer installed JCW for automatics now available in the US? I thought it was never released here.

Any idea of what the piggyback setup makes with just a tune and cai?

Thanks,

Mark

Not yet released officially for the automatic but a couple of people had it done already but others are still waiting for the release. There is already a thread in this section that goes over that.

The core question of this thread was JCW vs aftermarket for the automatic. It is a bit premature to address the question until the JCW/auto kit is actually available. This was the word from MotoringFile:
On another topic, we’ve also got confirmation that MINI USA is continuing to progress with it’s dealer installed engine kit for the automatic Cooper S (coupe). So for all those waiting for that kit, don’t give up yet.
That was back in March. Sounds promising, but also remember that the JCW/auto was never released in the US for 1st gen MINI.

I'm not sure with just a tune and CAI but here were my gains:
  • Stock + CAI I was at 180 ft/lbs of torque and 165 HP.
  • With all my parts added in it was up to 210 ft/lbs of torque and 180 HP (a 30 ft/lb, and 15 HP increase by adding in a TBE, FMIC, boost tubes, and turbo inlet).
  • Then with the addition of the PnP ECU, it went up to 260 ft/lbs of torque and 208 HP. That calculates to the PnP ECU adding in 50 ft/lbs of torque and 28 HP to my set up using the ALTA mappings.

I do not know how much it really takes advantage of the parts I have installed but it was a very nice jump for me in one day (an 80 ft/lb or torque increase and 43 HP total with parts and ECU).

I would assume that even without all of the extra parts, the ECU would add in a significant gain.

The proof is in the dyno. I can testify that the graph was not altered in anyway as I was standing right there watching and writing down the numbers.

As mini Mini Tech I have not did the ECU flash and JCW kit on a auto yet. Didn't even know that it is going to be available for the autos.

Since this was never done on the first genreration,i wouldn't expect to see it on the latest either.Having said that,i have ordered the JCW CAI and exhaust from 1fastmini to have installed on my auto|(R56).I am happy with the power and torque minus the ecu upgrade.Q

Did you mean you wouldn't expect the JCW kit on the automatics for R56's?

If so, I have to disagree. I've talked to my dealer and he read me some memo directly from Mini stating that the kits are almost done and that they were having issues with their ability to pass smog regulations with the new programming.

According to the dealer (and I take it with a grain of salt) they ARE coming out with the kit, just being delayed.
