A Fun Filled Foto Day

Well my fiancé was busy all day, and since I have no life I decided to spend the day cruising around stopping here and there to snap some pictures. Big ups to my buddy for giving me some company in the afternoon and buying me lunch. Thanks! Anyhoo, on my evening drive I found a lot of potential spots that I will try and hit some time in the future. But for now, check these suckers out!

I couldn't decide which one I like better out of 1 and 2 so I'm going to post both of them.

Sometimes flash can hurt the picture, this one is sans flash...
4

And since I can't let myself not use the flash setup, here is the same shot (kinda) with flash.

I'm pissed about this one, I was farther North closer to the storms. The lightning was a spectacular show, however there was no safe place to pull over and snap away. By the time I got to this spot the storm had died out and was pretty far back, but you can still see a little bit of lightning up there so what the hell, right?

Tomorrow I will add the rest of the shoot to my blog, if you are curious to see which ones didn't make the cut.

Really nice work. I personally like pics 2 + 4 the best.

Nice photos, Scott. You've got a great eye for balance. The color of the car works extremely well with your choice of backgrounds. The clarity is amazing! Scary weather, though. Storm clouds on the horizon, YIKES! Sweet ride, I must say. Looks like it would be a panic to drive on those twisty roads.

I look forward to seeing more of your work.

I like them all, but for me number 1 & number 5 really do it for me. Nice work, very well done.

I really like #1 the best. The lighting is right on.
Did you use two strobes? What settings?

Yes, two strobes with umbrella's. I don't recall the exact settings for that particular shot but I tend to keep it somewhere in the f4-f5 range when shooting flash. I find that anything lower than that and the flash is a little overbearing. Anything higher and it is underpowered. Remember, your flash is a constant speed so shutter speed has no effect on the actual flash exposure. It's all in the aperture/iso.

Here is a general idea on the setup for number 1 (Apparently I need to pull my pants up)

And here is the setup for 3

5 & 6 are without the umbrella's, I had to get a little more light out there. Plus it was getting rather windy.

My pleasure, unlike most photographers I try to help people out. I figure the more people into photography the more good pictures I get to look at.

Another question, not having to do with the pics above but, rather, some on your website. What lens did you use for the Air Show pics?

I'm going to be in Chicago next month. I was only going to take a point-n-shoot, but now realizing the Air Show will be in town then, I may take one of the Nikons.

Yeah, I'm curious as to where in Chicagoland that might be!
One of those old viaducts?

blacknblue: For the Airshow I brought my 70-200mm, but that was shooting with my old 300d (digital rebel) so with the sensor crop it was essentially shooting at 300mm, which was great. Thank you for taking a peak at my website! Often times I wonder if it is even worth the money to have it up there, so when I hear people are visiting it justifies the cost!

The pictures of Chicago were from a trip I took to visit a friend, I live in Cincinnati, OH (which is where the tunnel is located). Next time I go I'm definitely going to be taking the MINI along for the trip so I can grab some pictures underneath the "L".

I shoot 100% Canon, mainly because that's what I started out with back in the day and I've grown comfortable with the menu controls. In my opinion both Nikon and Canon are equally as capable.

#1 is a killer shot !!! not that the others are bad, but it's nearly perfect (not so, because it's not MINE).

lighting on the Mini is great, it being at an angle is a big plus. the end of the tunnel helps, but with not too much light (bright spots draw my eye).

nice shots !!!

No problem, I hope it helps you out a little! From now on when I go out and shoot I will try to get at least one shot of the setup and remember the flash settings.
