Safest way to strip wax?

I'm gonna switch to a different wax and I need to strip off the old one. The dishwashing liquid under my kitchen sink is "Dawn Ultra Concentrated". Everyone says to use Dawn but how much should you use without causing any damage to anything (if that's possible)?

Dawn shouldn't hurt. The new ultra concentrated stuff should be used in about half the measure that older instructions state. About a capful should be about right. I use P21S Total autowash for it (and to clean the engine).

Is Sunlight similar to Dawn?

I have no Dawn, but "Sun Light". It's also marketed to "cut grease" and is translucent like Dawn. Will it do in a pinch? (I'm guessing it's another manufacturer's version of Dawn?)

Not familiar with the product but I bet it would be alright. I am leary of anything with a lot of extra added to the detergent (ie scents). Not really sure why however.

Keep in mind that if you use a synthetic wax (Prima Epic, NXT, most of the commercial waxes out there), Dawn isn't going to do much to cut it.

You can use an alcohol/water mixture, or the P21S Total Wash that tex mentioned above (my personal preference).

I've got Meguiar's Gold Class on it now and it's been on there for probably about a month or so. How important is it really to strip off the old one before applying something different?

Most of the Mequiar's is probably worn but it would be a good idea to start with a clean slate to ensure consistent coverage and adhesion.

id remove old wax if im going from polymer to carnauba or vise versa.

but if it's polymer to polymer i'd just leave it and go directly to claying
the car and use my Amigo now that i have it.
