SUDDEN change in Magnaflow sound...
SUDDEN change in Magnaflow sound...
I have a Magnaflow installed on my 2006 MC. I've loved the sound since Day 1, but now I absolutely HATE it!
Accident on 3/15 caused the exhaust to be pushed upwards and when the collision center repaired everything (except the exhaust) the exhaust tip caused the bumper to MELT. The bumper was replaced and while waiting for the part to arrive from the local dealership, the collision center took Schultze to a muffler shop where the brackets were adjusted.
EVER since that "adjustment", the sound of my Magnaflow has been loud...RICER LOUD...it almost sounds like there's NOTHING between the engine and the exhaust tip except for straight pipe!
The sound INSIDE Schultze is rattle-your-teeth LOUD. I took a trip to DC a few weeks ago and the drone was unbearable! The driver side seat and floorboard VIBRATES in sync with the exhaust.
When I mentioned the increased sound/vibration to the collision center manager, he told me that he thought it was louder when he picked it up from the muffler shop but he was waiting to hear from me about it. Well, he heard about it on my way home from picking up Schultze from his collision center.
Took Schultze back to the collision center so they could take it back to the muffler shop. The muffler shop checked gaskets & whatnot and said "because Magnaflow uses a glass-pack, it's not uncommon for the exhaust to get louder as more miles are put on the system."
Now, this is the first performance exhaust I have EVER owned in my life and logic tells me that if an increase in sound is possible, it'd be such a gradual increase in sound that it probably wouldn't be easily detected.
If I'm motoring for more than 30 minutes, the vibration + NOISE makes me EXTREMELY cranky.
Does Magnaflow have a "glass-pack system"? (What EXACTLY is a glass-pack system, anyhow?!)
What else could be causing such a SUDDEN & NOTICEABLE change in sound?
I've barely motored in the last 10 days--mainly because I've been painting the interior bits & pieces--but also because I truly HATE the sound/vibration.
HELP!

I've got Magnaflows on my H2. Within a few months, the exhaust did indeed get louder. Of course, with a V8, the sound got better when it got louder.
According to this site from Magnaflow...
Magnaflow Mufflers
How do you know that Magnaflow mufflers are a true straight-through performance design? The fact that they’re reversible should clue you in. Since Magnaflow mufflers don’t utilize restrictive baffles and packing materials,
I was always under the understanding that Magnaflow DOES NOT use packing.
Personally, I would take the car to another reputable muffler shop and have them look at it.
We get cars in both of my bodyshops that get rearended and the exhaust gets bent CONSTANTLY.
Many times, the damage is up further closer to the engine. I would get another opinion and then go to the insurance company.
Hope you get it fixed soon.

I've got 90,000 miles and three years on my MagnaFlow and it sounds the same today as it did when I put it on.
I will say that after driving 2 hours at freeway speeds it sounds a little deeper, but never like a rice rocket.
Don't accept this carp...tell them to fix your exhaust.

Schultze has almost 24K on the clock and at least 19K on the Magnaflow...
I'm definitely going to press the issue and request that a 2nd shop take a look at Schultze...I'm not at all pleased and if my Magnaflow system needs to be replaced it needs to be replaced.
My daughter's boyfriend has a Civic with a loud exhaust...my Magnaflow sounds MUCH louder than his exhaust now and that's definitely NOT what I want!
Thanks for your input, Orangecrush & CHKMINI.

We have to replace entire systems (aftermarket and OEM) ALL THE TIME....
Good luck.

if your exhaust was "pushed forward"... your problem may be elswhere.
It may be the FLEX connector...before the cat.
It is braided wire inside and out with special internal hose.
So even if looking at the exhaust system you won't SEE a problem.
Get it up in the air (jack stands or lift) hopefully let the systen cool... then fire it up. Feel or listen for a partially muffled sound or pressure right at the flex connector.
I have seen these get torn when doing a pulley install or a clutch install. As a precaution I now unbolt the exhaust at the connector when moving the engine more than it would under normal operations.

Due to sneezing, I missed a 90-degree turn and hit a ditch that was approx18" deep. I did try to make the turn, but of course I didn't. First point of impact was driver front followed by the rear bottoming out in the ditch. At some point I became airborne again and slid across the farmer's field before coming to a complete stop.
The loudness seems to be located in the area between the centerstack console to the rear cupholder.
