R50/53 20,000 mile review of my 03 MCS
For those who are interested, and for MINI USA (suggestions below), here is my
20,000 mile report on my 03 MCS.
The Car:
Celeste, a December 6th 2002 build date, January 03 delivery date 2003 MCS EB/W.
Packages: cold, premium, sports a la carte with white 16" V-spoke and Dunlop SP5000 runflats.
Alloy patina dash with (originally) silver trim, magnesium door panels. HK stereo, lapis leather seats, rain sense wipers, auto dim mirror, dealer installed alarm, dealer installed MINI roof rack rails with narrow basket.
Added later:
Brake light mod, saddlebags, window tint 35% rear, 50% front.
Euro parcel shelf, AUX input, Forge Motorsports aluminum coolant expansion tank.
Re-did some interior trim: painted center speedo and dash vent trim rings in EB, tach trim ring, shift trim ring and cupholder trim as well as interior door handle 'Y'-brace in anthracite. Lined door pockets with charcoal gray velvet. Dynamatted door panels and epoxied loose speaker trim rings and other panel pieces in place to eliminate speaker buzz.
Work / service performed to date:
1st and only service at 12.5 k miles with oil change.
Brown coolant flushed.
A diode and harness was installed apparently to address some issue with the cruise control.
Speedo instrument cluster replaced.
Drivers side window motor and controller replaced.
Checked for transmission noise, no action taken.
Checked for faulty alarm and window dip problem, no action taken.
Checked for AC noise and vibrations, no action taken.
Rotated tires myself front to rear at 15 k miles (should have done much earlier).
Issues encountered:
Shortly after delivery temp gauge in center speedo cluster malfunctioned: occasionally did not return to zero, and then read high. This was resolved at first service by having speedo instrument cluster changed, problem solved.
Speedo went nuts once: I noticed that when unlocking car and opening door the speedo needle would drop below zero and try to move even beyond that in a rattling motion, and this with just the door open, no key in ignition! This rattling motion would stop when door was closed, and also stopped when key was inserted into ignition. Problem has not reappeared and presumably fixed with new speedo cluster.
Auto AC control panel went dead a couple of times: no lights on, none of the controls worked, upon starting car. Problem disappeared after re-booting the MINI (off and key out, re-starting car). This only happened early at less than 3k miles, problem has not reappeared since. Can you say MS Windows?
Alarm malfunction early on: alarm would set off repeatedly. This problem occured immediately after a car wash and coincided with a malfunction in the passenger side window dip function: with door closed, the window would dip-undip-dip-undip in a sewing machine type motion with no key in ignition and door closed! This could only be stopped by leaving the window open an inch or so. Took car to dealer (not my home dealer since on long road trip) who inspected the car but could not replicate problem. Dealer took apart BC1 computer and checked for water leaks, but found none. Dealer recommended to only hand wash the MINI and not take it through car washes. This problem has not reappeared since. I suspect that there was a minor leak in or near the BC1 computer as reported on other forums, and that dis- and reassembly eliminated the water leak and solved the problem.
I have had more problems with the window dip and motor function: for a while, I had to reset the window dip function about 2 times per week, very annoying!!!!
Then at around 13.5 k miles the driver side window wind function ceased to operate at all. Luckily this was in the closed position. Dealer replaced window motor and controller, window now operates normally, however, dip function still had to be reset frequently.
I have an idea now what might cause the frequent dip function resets: when the weather permitted, I drove a lot with sunroof and windows open. When pulling into the garage I had a habit of hitting the sunroof close button, and then closing both windows at the same time by using my index and little fingers to simultaneously hit both window buttons to close. I now believe that this simultaneous closing confuses the computer, and a short while after that (though not immediately afterwards) the dip function stops on one or both windows, usually both). After having stopped the simultaneous closing, the dip has not had to be reset. I will test more.
I had brown coolant at about 6k miles. It also appeared to be flocky (have gray stuff floating in it). Coolant was flushed at 1st service, but turned brown again in less than 7 days. There is also once again grey flotsam in the coolant. My car had the old style coolant expansion tank. Since I was going on another long (>5k miles) road trip, I did not want to risk having to deal with a faulty old style expansion tank that would at some point be certain to leak, and so opted to install the Forge Motorsports aluminum expansion tank at a cost of $170. I am happy to have that tank although the tank was NOT a good fit and took a lot of effort to install!
My car has so many squeaks and rattles that I cannot list them all. Well, it's a British car, what can I say. It does have more squeaks and rattles than my 1973 MGB-GT had! I solved the door panel ones myself, and will have dealer look into the sunroof rattles: the sunroof now makes noises in all three positions: closed, cracked and fully open. Recently, I also got a pronounced clunking noise from the rear that sounds very much like something broke off somewhere and is now clunking around. I checked out the suspension and all is ok, plus, the noise appears to come from mid to high up in the rear of the car. It is not the hatch or the ubiquitous hatch rattle, it is something else. I will have this checked out at the next dealer visit.
Interior silver trim on door panel 'Y'-braces started to peel. Repainted the trim myself. I find the door panels are poorly (as in very cheaply) assembled. The silver trim is not very robust.
My windshield sucks, there is no other way to put it! I have had numerous pits and chips from pebbles, grit etc.., that on my old car would not have been a problem. Even the most minute piece of grit will leave a very small impact crater. Nothing that hits this windshield does not leave a mark, the windshield has more damage than the paint on the front of the car, so the windshield glass appears to be softer than the paint, for crying out loud! I have well in excess of 400+ chips and pits on the shield (this is an estimated, extrapolated number from a count in a small area). I have not had a stress crack yet, but am beginning to have visibility issues with this windshield on account of the many chips. It will need replacement soon, and I will try my luck with PPG glass rather than getting another substandard MINI OEM windshield.
I have not had cold start, stumble or yo-yo issues. Have not had ECU re-flashed.
Unresolved issues:
The Getrag 6-sp tranny I have makes a racket of a noise at idle that disappears when the clutch pedal is depressed, typical signs of a noisy throwout bearing. I have compared the sound to the Getrag of other MCSs, and no other ones make this sound! I have had this checked out by 2 dealers, and both responded that the Getrag is inherently very noisy, but that not all of them necessarily are. Both have said they do not recommend the transmission to be replaced at this time, but to keep an eye on it (or rather, an ear).
My AC makes the howling noise many have reported at around 3200 rpm. In my case, this is accompanied by very strong engine vibrations when the AC compressor is engaged. I have had the dealer check this out. The noise was replicated - though weak - and the vibrations were weak enough that the dealer only wanted to do engine diagnostics, found no fault, and recommended no action. Nevertheless - while the noise does not bother me, the vibrations do! I will continue to investigate this, as I am not happy with this situation. On the other hand, the cooling function works well for me in the coastal TX climate (mostly 85-100 degrees at >90% humidity).
Recently, at about 19.5 k miles I started to hear a clacking sound in the steering column at slow speed when turning, but only very occasionally. Others have reported this and those that have had their steering columns replaced. Will have this checked out by the dealer at the next visit.
Fun factor:
Even after 20k+ miles I have to say, this is the most fun car I have ever driven. Love this little thing!
Suggestions for improvements:
We need a decent windshield, MINI, please!!!!!!
The AC needs improvement in my view to eliminate the howling and vibrations, although I cannot point the finger to what part is causing the noise / vibration problems.
Even though I have not encountered problems with this, I believe the power steering fan is a weak design element, and maybe the whole power steering setup. There have been some reports about power steering failures, and this makes me nervous. I can imagine few things worse than the power steering going out as you negotiate some tight twisties. I think at the very least an indicator/warning light for power steering temperature would be on order, since with the new wiring harness setup I believe there is no indication if the fuse to the PS fan blows, resulting in possible overheating of the PS pump, and failure. Hhhhmm, maybe another DIY project?
The cruise control continues to be unsatisfactory, even after the diode/harness work, whatever that was supposed to address. It does not hold the speed well (set speed +/- as much as 4 mph), the +/- buttons do not perform the increase/decrease by 1 mph as stated in manual, and on hilly roads the response is way too slow, resulting in the car decelerating downhill and then accelerating uphill, and decreasing mileage by as much as 2-3 mpg.
I find the throttle response way too slow. This is a bit of a problem if you need to e.g. cross a busy road from standstill with AC on. AC on combined with lethargic throttle will result in a dangerous off-the-line-bog-down that can only be avoided by pre-revving the engine considerably before engaging clutch. The usual blipping of the throttle I do for such moments works ok without the AC on, but with AC on you need almost 2-3 preparatory seconds to get going, too much!
Overall, there is work that needs to be done to reduce the frequency of squeaks and rattles, although the driveability issues are obviously more important than rattles and trim.
Other minor suggestions:
An old suggestion: speed readout in OBC (already coming for 2004, thanks MINI!).
With Daytime Running Lights, change light computer settings so that DRL do NOT come on (when programmed), in light switch position 1, only with lights OFF (position 0). This would allow user to drive the car with foglights and no lo-beams or DRLs. Alternatively, have DRLs in switch position 1, but in this position turn DRLs OFF if front fogs are truned ON. Currently, if DRLs are programmed, (front) foglights will only come on with lo-beams on (light switch position 2).
With the Cold Weather Package, exterior mirror heating is ALWAYS on. That is silly, and results in drying spots on mirror after rain or carwash. Use a timer to turn mirror heat on only for first 15 minutes after starting car, or better yet, use a switch!
An idea: I love the auto dim mirror, but now I get blinded by lights in exterior mirrors. How about exterior auto-dim mirrors linked to same sensors as internal auto dim mirror?
Another important request I have for MINI:
please give us a detailed listing of all the fuses in our MINIs, and the circuits they protect.
It is absolutely silly not to know if something goes out, which fuse to check, but rather to have to go through all the 50+ fuses the cars have to see if one might have popped.
Please get us a list of fuses!!!! The icons on the fuse covers are too cryptic, and from that alone no one can tell which is e.g. The PS fuse, or a radiator fan fuse, etc..
That's it. Still the most fun car I've owned.

Thanks for the detailed report.
I must say, I'm glad to hear how enthusiastic you are for the vehicle, even after the number of issues you've had. Moreover, I'm selfishly hoping that we suffer far fewer of the issue.
But we'll be on the look out for some of them now.
Hope you keep enjoying!!!!

Thanks very much for your excellent review.
It's great you don't have cold start, stumble or yo-yo problems after 20K miles. Don't change your software.
Maybe you can add a 30K followup at a later date. I have an oct 2002 build and only 5800 miles!

Damn Markus,
That's one kick *** report. How much will you charge me to write one for Blubelle when she hits 20k?
Seriously, I think Celeste has a few more rattles and a few more problems than the average MCS, put it down towards British CARacter. Even with all the warts, we luv 'em.

Yep,
some might say that Celeste is a moody and sometimes caranky gal!
Just shows character!
Her rear tires are almost ready for replacement ('cause they got used a lot when they were on the front).
I'm still hoping that anything I'm sorting out now, I won't have to deal with later.
Bottom line, she's just one fun gal to be with!

MG-BGT,
Thanks for the time & effort to write that terrific report.
When looking back on all the trials and tribulations of these cars ...only then can we truly realize how much time and effort we put into them .
Great stuff !!!

MG-BGT-
EXCELLENT review!
Your Mini pretty much is EXACTLY what I want to get  I drove a Saab 9-3 Vector yesterday, considering the "Deals", nice car but it was just like *yawn* when I got out. Then I thought about when I test-drove the MCS in May, and I was like
and then looked at the car some more
I cannot help but wonder, is the hesitation another form of the stumble you have?
The mirror heating is indeed silly. One thing to keep in mind about the cruise control is (with a small engine), the lack of lower-end torque makes it harder for it to keep a consistent speed (tho +/- 3MPH is too high). When I drive my vette it is spot on, my sisters Chev Prism is close, the MCS I drove was close too- tho up steeper hills was wanting a lower gear...
I wonder what the efx of hard-wiring the power-steering fan (constant run) are?

great review!
i have about 13,000 on Madge now and she is doing great. I had a problem that was fixed without a hitch regarding the...actually i dont even know since im so mechanically uninterested...but whatever it was they fixed and I love her dearly. However, the A/C sucks the life out of my car and im still waiting for my dealer to call with a fix. I figure by the time they get to it, it may be january and then i wont need the A/C and also I AM THIN AND GORGEOUS!!
thx

MG-BGT: great review, it's good to know I'm not the only one with a growing list of problems yet still loves the car for what it is.
Perhaps I should do a 21,660 mile review when my 2002 MCS gets back from the dealer for yet another service trip.
