LSD swap - is it fairly straightforward?

I just got off the phone with my local shop, and had asked about a rough estimate for a clutch/flywheel/LSD install. The guy I spoke with wasn't sure about the LSD install because he didn't know if there are any special tricks involved. He said that the LSDs that they put into BMWs have required disassembly of the differential and shimming of gears/bearings and such.

Other than the expected disassembly to get to the diff, is it a pretty straightforward r&r or is there "black magic" involved?

if you buy a quaif it's as simple as taking the tranny off and putting the lsd in it and re-installing the tranny. If you buy an obx it should be the same process but a couple of people here have found it's a good idea to take the obx apart before throwing it in to check the spacing washers and shims and such... otherwise it's the same as the quaif in theory.

a phantom grip requires that you take the diff apart and do some mumbo jumbo.

The OBX is a straight remove and replace the same as the quaife.

This is from a recent thread I posted to 70spop. No 'black magic' involved!

Here's my experience with the install:

Here's my phantom grip install from last month. It's for sale in the marketplace too!

Thanks, guys! Jeremy - great links thanks!

Like I said, I won't be doing this myself. A shop will be doing it. After reading through a lot of that, though, I'd feel better about a shop with lots of MINI clutch experience. Seems REALLY involved, if not especially tricky. We'll see.

My son and I did 2 clutches, OBX LSD and flywheels in our "spare" time (Not working our real jobs) in a week ... not a big issue but the right tools ...including some swivels and extensions make the job easy(er)

Both really happy with our systems & especially the OBX LSD ...
We did disassemble both and one had bad torque specs and the other had the famous cup washers backwords. also some machining shortcuts (flashing left on through holes)
I think the design and materials are good but perhaps cheap labor is the reasion for the assembly ... take the 15 min and check it out...

Hmmm, there may be another one in your future... I'll get in touch with you when I get all the parts.
