Ok, well a diverter valve which comes stock is designed to recirculate the air back into the intake. On the other hand the BOV dumps atmospherically. Thats why its so much louder compared to a DV. Now on most cars BOV can cause drivability issues. Anything from increased turbo lag, running lean between shifts, and just decreased performance over all. You however can make your stock DV more audible. My friend has an alta intake on his mini and his turbo and DV are LOUD! I first thought it was an aftermarket one. I have a 1.8T VW and chose to go with a aftermarket dv since i am more concerned about the drivability/performance. But either way its your car do what you prefer end of the day you need to be happy

Wow thanks for all that great 411, but what are the benefits of having one ?why would someone add a bov to their engine other than for the noise?

If you run a big turbo set up with large amounts of boost. Recirculating a lot of boost could damage the turbo.

well, the stock mini s has a bypass valve, not a blow off valve. blow off goes to the atmosphere, bypass goes back into the intake.

If you're running significantly higher boost then the engine was designed for, an after market bpv or bov would be in order. Most people just put bov's on for noise.

A bov will cause your car to run rich after shifts(just about all turbo cars, can't be 100% sure on mini)... not really a big deal, but excessive fuel entering your exhaust can foul up your spark plugs or your catalytic converter...

Some really good info here. In the begining I ordered a BOV from OUR favorite aftermarket supplier. One of the salesmen misrep the product. (saying it would not change driveability) the car ran like crap. Backire between shifts and what not. I gave the supplier a second try with a CAI and was happy with the sound. I feel this is the best way to go unless you track-only your car.

You can sound really cool and pretend like you are in one of the Fast and Furious movies, double clutchin' etc etc.
Seriously, BOV does about as much for performance as those whistling exhaust tips. Save your money.

Agree, complete waste of money, aside from sound (which is awful).

Yeah, exactly the problem. The ECU is expecting more oxygen when you just vented it to the atmosphere. You really shouldn't use one without moving to an ECU that accounts for it.
