Tweat Me To Some Twisties May 17th (Southern CO Ride)
Tweat Me To Some Twisties (see the new map Here). Now improved without dirt!
This ride takes us south, through the balmy southerly breezes of Colorado Springs before turning west to take on the Rockies once more. Twisties are guaranteed as are epicurean delights at Zoka's Restaurant & Bar in Pine, CO. Ride this ride and you too will be able to boast to your friends that you have been to Florence and Canyon City and have seen the ancient mining town of Victor. Brave the Rockies with fellow MINIs and Minis and you will be able to impress your children with tales of High Park Road and Cripple Creek.
Here are the tentative details:
7:30 AM Starbucks
(Yosemite & Maximus - Lone Tree)
9:00 AM Quickie breakfast stop in Colorado Springs Starbucks
(S Nevada Ave & Cheyenne Meadows Rd)
817 Cheyenne Meadows Rd, Colorado Springs, CO 80906
Canon City
Cripple Creek
Lunch, early afternoon, at Zoka's Restaurant and Bar in Pine
Grove, Co. www.zokas.com The restaurant is dog friendly so this is a
doggie friendly ride.
Return to Denver by 4:00 PM after about 250 miles of Colorado glory.
The highlight is a trip up Skyline Drive in Canon City. It is a narrow
1-way road overlooking the city, Florence, et al. Short and nice.
And a nice visit to Victor, old mining town, and Cripple Creek, a
gambling town. Twisties galore. Round Tweat = 274 miles.

You are on
What we need is a place where the CS folks can meet us, that is not far from the highway, and where we can get go-food rather than a sit down. As you know from other long rides, every 1:15 we spend sitting somwhere translates to a longer day at the end.
Please just post your suggestions.

Checking over the trip map I noticed Hwy 67 Phantom Canyon Rd from Florence to Victor is part of the trip plan.
I lead a trip last summer & went through there & it was not something I would ever repeat in a Mini. Ask Jacob what he said later once we got to Victor. His Pepper White & My all Black Mini were the same shade of brown by the end.
It is a dirt road for 20-30 miles & gets down to single lane, a creek crossing & deep ruts we had to take diagonally to keep from dragging underneath or bashing the front end. We got a lot of stares from the 4x4s & trucks w/ high clearance that are the expected mode of travel throgh there. The rough section was at times a crawl <5mph & took us 2.5 hours. Why it is shown as a viable part of Hwy 67 is a mystery.
There is a fun option just West of Canon City that starts near the Royal Gorge, "Hwy 9 North towards Hartsell" then East to Guffey, then East to Cripple Creek.
Hwy 9 is the route my trip took in a N to S direction from Hartsell before trying Hwy 67 to get to Victor & Cripple Creek.

I have an aversion to dirt roads - just ask Jacob.
So yeah, if we can avoid the quaint 19th century road construction I'm all for it!
I'm guessing that Jonathan does not have this dirt phobia and forgot that I was going to go.

Or The Omelette Parlor is a favorite. http://www.co-spgs-omeletteparlor.com/
Oooh and Western Omelette. http://www.westernomelette.com/
Can we save our sit down meal for lunch? With 250 miles it will be a fairly long ride and to add time to the front-end might be too much. I think the intent for "Quickie" was more like a McDonalds or Starbucks or some thing. Just really a spot to meet up with the southern folks and grab-n-go.
I am partial to greasy spoons by the way - best Sunday breakfasts are at the local spoons for sure.

Agreed on the meal
I had not intended an hour affair, but something more like a Starbucks. 15 mins for all. We will need the time.
As for 67, I could swear I drove that road a few years ago. Maybe not, maybe I am conflicted. It could have been High Park Road.
Whatever, let's go the paved way, we all agree. Chuck, feel free to edit the post.
And we are not eating in CC.

I'm still unsure of whether I can come or not. I hope the answer is yes. We shall see though, we've been pretty busy lately.
ruff road memory relived
It's true! If you dont' believe us, have a look at my photobucket site. The ones toward the bottom are from after we got out of the canyon, you can see the tons of dirt and dust. You would definately hate this road chuck.

Thanks for posting the pictures of the Phantom Canyon section of Hwy 67. Looking at the pictures again I felt a shiver of relief come over me once more that we actually made it through w/ out damage!
Mini Off Roading at it's best!
Hope to be able to make the drive. I was going to suggest that the route from Cripple Creek back to Woodland Park change to Teller 1 instead of 67, but now see this is now the route into CC. Route 67 can be a drag if you get stuck behind one of the shuttles, but Teller 1 has some nice curves as it makes it way to Florissant and Highway 24. Just be ready for the chance of snow up there we had some last year in late May, in fact, I did not take my snow tires off until Memorial Day.
Looking forward to meeting some of the other owners.

Yes, meet-up with everyone else in COS. Really need to get new tires soon as the original RFs are getting close to their tread limits. Trying to decide if I want new rims at this time, guess I need to start shopping.

Not to get off on a tangent here, but I replaced my RF w/Nitto NeoGens and they are great!

The ride sounds like a lot of fun but unfortunately I have to back out! I'm moving the end of this month and my list of "things to do" is still pretty long. So, I have to spend this Saturday trying to knock that list down a little. I'm sorry.
After the move my schedule should hopefully free up! I hope to be able to make more runs after May.
Have fun everyone!!

See y'all there. MR MINI got a new rear bumper since being rear-ended last week so he's good as new. Weather should be great. We have an undeveloped 5 acre lot near Canon City so I know the route. Unfortunately it got burned out during the Iron Mountain fire a few years back!
