Interior/Exterior K&N cold air intake
K&N cold air intake
I just purchased the K&N Typhoon cold air intake for my S, was wondering why they want you to disconnect the battery? the only thing you have to disconnect is the throttle body connector and thats it, if you don't have the key in or on, then there should be no problem, usually in other cars if you turn the key on with it disconnected, it will set the engine light on, but i don't know in the mini's. other than the battery post jumper, i don't see any reason to disconnect the battery unless your knew at stuff and might hit it against metal. any info on why would be helpful. thank you
They say that on every instruction i've ever seen. I think its just a liability just encase you stick your hand somewhere it shouldn't be and hurt yourself. Its just so you cant sue for stupidity
theres no plug in or harness on the K&N set up, so it won't need a reset for that. just making sure because i don't think if your not turning the key on while unplugging the throttle body cable, it would do anything to the computer. but on a mini i wouldn't know, on any other car i have worked on, as long as you don't turn the key on your good to go but i want to make sure. im guessing no information should be comming from that connector at all if the key is not on.
It is mostly a safety issue. You shouldn't be working in an engine bay with hot wires.
Also it resets the computer so it can relearn the new mods. Intake = more air. So the computer needs to be made aware of the increased airflow. It has nothing to do with connectors & everything to do with air/fuel ratios.
Good luck & post some pics when you are done!

well the answer is in, i talked to 2 techs, one at mini, and they said the disconnect of the battery is there for people that are not to smart and could touch the jumper postitive post in the front thats attached to the original airbox and short out the battery, and so noone trys to sue K&N for shorting out the car. also just in case someone turns the key on (hint to self) lol The techs also told me that theres nothing to worry about it learning about the new air intake, that would be a mod they can do in the computer with some other goodies if i wanted. alls good in the land of purple mini
Ok. All installed, didn't have to unhook the battery, but if your not good at touching metal to postitive battery, unhook it to be safe, i was fine. the only problem i see is the positive battery post up front slides on the new K&N part to loose. does anyone have an idea or as done this to figure out how to keep in on snug?
