making my own front splitter and was wondering what was a good final buld material. i like how the Wyvern splitter looks, any idea what its made of? thanks
The Wyverns' are very competitively priced...the splitter costs more than the wing for many reasons...the wing is a helluva deal compared to all the other extensions and wings...
I think ABS would be pretty good and you can get it for nice and cheap. Most of the ones available from MINI vendors are fiberglass with a CF layer on top...not sure about the wyvern one though....never seen it in person.
For a DIY project ABS would probably be the easiest to work with and most cost effective.
For ABS plastic check out http://www.mcmaster.com/ under 'raw materials' they have all sorts of stuff from ABS sheets to CF sheets. You pick the thickness and dimensions so you can really find exactly what you're looking for.
1/8" or 3/16" no thicker, no thinner
I think that 1/16" would be too flimsy and 1/4" would be too thick...but if you wanted the extreme thinness and thickness would be those
Personally, I think any thickness of ABS would be too flimsy.JMHO There are reasons why they arent produced in that material. there are a lot of aerodynamic forces put on any near horizontal surface when speeds get over 20 mph. Think about holding your hand out the window and how much the wind force moves it up or down when you turn it slightly. Now multiply that surface area times twenty.
You can use fiberglass on any material to include plywood, cardboard, etc. So you will be safe witht he ABS. As a matter of fact, the ABS would be the best material to use. Fiberglass can be messy and smelly, so make sure you use gloves and work in a ventilated area. You can use fibercloth and lay liquid resin over it. Then you can sand it and paint it. It sounds easier than it is, but not at all hard. Just time consuming.
