Interior/Exterior Painted Scoop Flat black
Painted Scoop Flat black
Just painted my scoop flat black and it looks almost exactly like the black trim on my 06 MCS. Ill have pics tomorrow when there is light.
This is what I used. All purchased at advanced auto.
- 800 grit sand paper
- Duplicolor Universal flat black (small can)
- Duplicolor Primer (small can)
1.) I removed the scoop via the bolts unter the bonnet and ever so careful of the clips so they did not break.
2.) Took the scoop to my deep sink and scrubbed off all I could even on the parts not planned to be painted (the underside.
3.) I then had a small bucket of water and jsut began wet sanding the thing as even as posible till there was no spot left shiny some areas reached the plastic underneath but it was completely smooth. I was suprised at how little paint and clearcoat was on the scoop.
4.) i then went back to the deep sink and cleaned off the scoop and dried it the sun. Again checking for any spots i missed. Hit it one more time with the wet sanding then again washed.
5.) After it dried the second time I had basicly a metalic Matte finish electric blue hood scoop lol. I applied my first coat of primer light and even I recomend coating the inside uper part of the scoop first so you can hold it at an angle for a better spray. I let it dry for 20 mins.
6.) After I let the primer dry a bit I dry sanded it with fresh 800 grit paper with hardly any pressure. I used a wet cloth to clean it up after rinsing and repeating till nothing came up.
7.) Second coat of primer went on and after it dried it looked like gray plastic. I let this dry about 15 mins as it dries fairly quick.
8.) Once dried I went on to apply the flat black as evenly as possible taking my time and alowing it to dry a bit at times to keep it from puddling. I let it sit at one point for 20 mins so I could add the finishing layer. I let it sit for 1 hour at this point.
9.) reinstalled the scoop careful again not to bust anything.
That was it it made me realize how dirty the rest of my car looked. If you take your time and prep your surface you can make even spraypaint look like it was professionally done. It makes me want a flat black mini now lol. I think next ill doo my upper grill. Pics to come!

The pain i listed in my post matched about perfect with the black trim pieces, with the only exception being that it does not have the texture. There is a recent post in int/ext that someone mentions clear coats that will give you the same flat or the satin finish.
P.s. No pics today cause i was too lazy to clean Betty and wipe the nasty bird dookie i woke up to see. They straffed my bonnet like a bunch of german Folke Wolfes.

Prior to bucking up and buying a CF hood scoop, I did this mod as well. I used spray on truck bed liner. It sounds weird, but it matched the color and texture almost exactly. It looked very good and didnt chip at all, but one of the bolts on he scoop broke, and i decided that if i was gonna have to replace it anyway, Id upgrade.
Im not 100% sure I have pics of this on my car, but I do still have the scoop. I'll snap a couple pictures and get em up so you all stop thinking that Im stark raving mad.

Really want to see how it turned out.
Just a side note, tho: you really should give it a couple of coats of clear. Duplicolor makes both satin and flat clear coat, and it will help prevent the flat black from chipping.
