runflats or non-runflats? Why? (beyond just "a softer ride") Brand/tire preferences? Why?

I got 16k off my stock/OEM Goodyear Eagle runflats 205/45 R17 84V and they're down to the wearmarks. I was kinda disappointed with that mileage, but, I have been to the dragon 5 times this past year so... that might account for the mileage. But anyway, Can anyone tell me what I should be looking for and why?

I read on here that some people replace their tires with non-runflats for "a smoother ride" - but I don't really know what that means? I don't notice a rough ride now?

And what about treadwear? I prefer to get the most miles I can outa the the tires? Anyone with a treadlife warranty?

And if you prefer non runflats - have you ever had to deal w/ a flat tire? How did you handle it?

I don't have the cash or space for "summer tires" and "winter tires" so - I guess I need something I can use all year round. I read somebody was running Goodyear Eagle F1 All Seasons?

Running without runflats will not be a problem. Sevral members on this site have been driving various cars for 30+ years and only had 1-2 flat tires. It is just not common anymore.

Non runflats will last longer. After you make the switch, you will see how harsh your runflats were.

 

Non-runflats ..... Go to Target and get a Slime kit which includes a compressor for around $20. Add a plug kit and you are pretty much covered. I run Kuhmo ECSTA tires.

 

i have Goodyear Eagle F1 All Seasons 215 45 zr 17and they are a lot rougher than the runflats but otherwise very nice handling

 

MINI makes an emergency kit for about $100 at Morristown in a nice bag.

 

I'm having a tough time deciding what to go with in the spring (i.e. runflats or not). I read somewhere that runflats were a bad ideal on the R53, but that the R56 suspension/handling was tuned to work with runflats. I suppose I have a few months to decide.

 

Goodyear Eagle FI All-Season in 205/45R17 (stock size). Purchased from and installed by Tire Rack in South Bend. I picked up a Slime kit with compressor from AutoZone for about $25.00.

 

I like my Yokohama Parada-Spec 2s.. they're nice in the summer...
and Blizzaks in the winter.

My SO keeps his Kuhmos on year round (but doesnt drive his MINI in bad weather) and adores them on and off of the track.

I just replaced by Dunlop Runflats with Michelin non runflats, and the difference in ride quality is amazing. Think it corners better as well... If you need an A/S tire, go with Continentals as a prime and Goodyear as a secondary. I think the Conti's are all around good tires for the money in the A/S tread. Any way, non runflats are probably all I'll use on this (R56) in its lifetime.

Have any of you had any experiences w a flat tire on your non-runflats? That's my concern...I dunwanna leave my cabrio on the side of the road somewhere!?

 

Stay with the run flats if you like the ride. Like many, however, I think it's too rough.

 

I like the ride b/c I don't know any different I s'pose.

I hate however, the poor treadlife that I experienced. I went to CR (Consumer Reports.org) this morning and they don't have any solid independent recommendations for runflats?

 

I'd like to replace my stock Goodyear runflats (195/55/16) on my '05 MCC with Michelin Hydroedge that have been great on my other cars. Michelin doesn't make the Hydroedge in that size but has a 205/55/16. It's only 1/2 inch taller and about 1/2 inch wider. I have a factory temp spare up underneath the boot. Anyone see a problem with making that switch?

 

oh they are rougher? a lot of noise and less comfort? i thought goodyear f1s were better than runflats...hmm...maybe cause you have the 215s instead of 205???

 

Runflats....I love my Pirelli eufori's and will replace with same when needed. Impossibly good grip on dry twisty's with no squirm. PEZ
