the MCS exhaust is designed for a turbo, so will probably sound funny and not give the right amount of flow necessary for a N/A motor. Go custom or buy an exhaust made for the MC.

You'll need to modify the rear bumper too, but you could probably find a used rear bumper from someone who does an aero kit.

18K vs 21K is 3K. Shoulda gone for 21K to begin with.
Not being very helpful to the OP but there is a lesson to be learned. If you are a performance oriented guy/gal, stretch your wallet and go for the bigger/stronger engine when buying a car. For example, 3.0L instead of 2.5L and turbo instead of non-turbo. It will save you money and headache and envy later on. Sorry, OP's friend.

The reason the R56 MC has the side single exhaust versus the MCS center exhaust is that the MC has a spare tire well in the back, and hence a spare tire. The MCS has no spare. So I dont think that a twin exhaust system of any kind would be possible in the MC.

All R56 Mini's with 16 inch wheels, or larger, come with run-flats. 15 inch wheels get regular tires on the MC and are not available on the MCS (might check that last little tidbit as I am operating from memory).

All MC's come with a spare tire. The MCS does not have a spare tire. The MC's spare tire would have to be removed to install an exhaust system from, or like the one in the MCS.

You could always rig up some sort of fake dual tip exhaust, but the spare tire would probably have to go if center mounting it is a priority as well.

That is probably the way to go. . . .

Not only would the tire have to go but you would have to cut into the well to make it work - BAM - the car is now frame damaged lol

???

Two questions:

1. Why didn't he get an MCS in the first place?

2. Why are you posting for him?

I know this is an old post but I'm curious. Is this true?
I've seen someone here post a picture of a Dooper Clubman with an S-style exhaust.

In an ideal world I'd love this exhaust style (also seen on the Golf R32) on my R56 Cooper but I always dismissed the idea as impossible. Is it not?

Nothing is impossible given:

1. Enough money
2. Willingness to modify (possibly extensively) your car.

While it is certainly possible to remove your spare tire, cut into the well to make space for the tubing, get/prep/paint/install a bumper with a center exit hole, and have a custom exhaust made/hung - is it really worth it? Seems much easier (and cheaper) to buy an S to begin with.

Of course I'm sure that it could be done more inexpensively if you hack on the MC bumper, leave the tire where it is, and have some piping bent around the well to come out of the hole in the middle of the bumper. Or you could hide a turndown on the stock muffler and mount some dummy tips in the center hole of the bumper...but those solutions would probably look pretty mickey mouse...

I removed my spare tire and mount after I changed wheels. The mounting holes for both exhausts are on all R56's since the subframe is the same. The only obstacle for the MCS exhaust on a MC is the underbody aluminum sheilding and the rear valance both of which could be modified. As far as the MCS exhaust designed for a turbo.I have an MCS motor and exhaust from a wrecked R56 and aside from the muffler shape they have the same components(2 cats, resonator, diameter) so it won't sound funny.
