Rattle with new wheels...

So I bought a set of winter tires and rims... and after the first flurries fell this weekend, I finally put them on...

My issue was that there was a rattle (audiable and felt) coming from the right front on overrun (easing off the gas or coasting)... the centercaps have been removed (as I thought that they were the cuplrit, and it made no difference).
It sounded like a louder and tinnier version of the exhaust burble, and it can be felt in the SOtP. (seat of the pants)

I searched the archives and found squat.

The blue centering rings were all in place and snug and lugs torqued to 95#'. These were for the correct rings and wheels for an R53 with the 12mm bolts. Mine was built (Aug. '05) before the R56 change-over in Lug sizes to 14mm.) The tires were mounted with the dir. arrow pointing the correct way.

It happened when coasting, both in gear & decelerating, and in neutral coasting, starting at speeds of around 25mph and up through highway speeds.

The rattle was speed dependent (higher freq. at higher speeds).
It did not happen while on the brakes, and it did not happen while on the gas (or steady-state)... only coasting...
Not only did it *not* make noise on acceleration or during braking, but sometimes it went away on light turns and was temp dependent to boot!)

SO

The next day, once it was light again, I pulled the wheels off (also it helped being nice and warm here in NJ today)... I cleaned off some surface scum (very light surface rust) on both the hub and wheel and used a lite smear of anti-seize...

I re-attached everything and torqued back down to 95#' and viola!

no more rattle on coast down... I think some of the surface crap cause the front right either not to seat properly, or gave way after I torqued everything down... so that caused the problem (Slightly loose wheel ), and now its solved (after two hours of checking)!

Happy Motoring

(I hope this helps out others)
