Rear gets really dirty in the rain
Anyone notice how dirty the back of the car gets when it rains? I mean it is filthy. The rest of the car doesn't get nearly as dirty. I'm sure it's from the road spray, but I'm not sure what to do about it. Do the oem splashguards work well? I was thinking about getting them to help with this issue. Any thoughts?
I doubt you will be able to do anything about it. It is typical for most cars for the rear to get dirty in the rain. The rear will get dirtier than the rest of the car without the rain. With the rear exhaust and short over hang on the Mini it is probably worse.
It's just a MINI design feature...
You'll especially see this when you open the boot and inspect the wells that accommodate the boot hinges. Sometimes I think I could build little sand castles in there...

I tis a good thing. That is a sign of proper air flow dynamics around the car. For instance, my old E36 M3 had more of that rear dirt effect than a standard 3-series because of differences in the aerodynamic bodywork. In that case, the rear diffuser made the difference.

True, but...
The same thing is true of all hatchback designs: the more square-ish the back end, the higher the pressure drop in the airstream behind the body at speed.
That's the reason they add a wiper to the rear windscreen, otherwise you wouldn't be able to see out the back window when it's raining / snowing / otherwise vision-impaired.
Put it up to the price you have to pay for driving something nifty! At least the whole back sides not so large as to make washing it off difficult!

It amazed me when i first drove in the rain but it is something you get used to . Just dont try to take off with a wet car on a nice fall day as you will most likely have the entire rear window filled with leaves .
its raining in sacramento today and i experienced what you area all talking about... the front and sides of the car looked clean, albeit wet but the back end... my goodness it was nasty. I just rinsed it off when i got home to get all that loose dirt off the car. That way, when it dries, it will look clean!

its a problem with most everything that has a high back end. Creates more turbulence at the back which allows the rain to deposit all the dirt on the car. If the flow where laminar the air would be moving smoothly across the car not allowing much to actually touch your car. The turbulent air will create random swirls which transfer all the dirt on the road that got picked up with the rain and sprayed into the air onto to your car. Its a pain, but I hate to think how little space we would have if the mini kept to flow laminar.
